Hello,
My name is Melissa and I'm pretty new to this site. However, in reading multiple posts from the folks here, I see a lot of stats posted about doctors and hospitals. My question is, what is the best way to find out how many of a certain type of procedure a surgeon had done or a hospital has done? There are websites out there who charge for this info and then don't really tell you alot.
After moving from Tulsa to Austin I'm looking for a cardiologist and a future surgeon and don't know where to start, except with my insurance network list, but it doesn't provide stats.

I appreciate any pointers you can give.

Thanks,

Melissa

Howdy, Melissa.
My insurance provider gives Heart Hospital of Austin two stars under the "premium cardiac care" category. I am going to Houston, TX from Florida to see a heart surgeon, Dr. Gerald Lawrie. I learned about him from one of my cardiologist's associates. You also have St Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, TX. Ask your former doctors. Hope this helps a little bit. :)
Regards,
Liz

Melissa:

I got some info from my insurance carrier's website. I also called Baylor Medical Center and talked to someone in the PR dept and told her the stats I wanted and she got back with the answers.
I looked into where doctors had gone to school & had trained at, what their areas of special interest were.

Greetings!

We zero'd in on Cleveland Clinic after we looked at this link:

http://www.usnews.com/usnews/health/best-hospitals/rankings/specihqcard.htm

Good Luck!

Me too. I figured a valve repair specialist at the top-ranked heart hospital (which also does more valve surgeries than any other in US) had to be a good bet. Before deciding to go to Cleveland, I talked to a local surgeon who told me he was brilliant and qualified and experienced...but I had no way to validate his high opinion of himself. :p

Melissa,
I couldn't argue that the Cleveland Clinic wouldn't be great.
Although I am originally from Cleveland I decided to stay here in Michigan.
My referrals came from a very trusted co-worker who was also a close friend.
Maybe you could re-post your question to get the attention of the many Texans on this site. They may have some good leads for you.

I set it up with a partner myself as a non-profit (I'd been in the health care informatics business for a decade, and was distressed at how little hard, objective data were available to us, consumers). If anybody wants to contribute specific ideas to the forum there, I'd appreciate it.
