Hi everyone, couple of questions, I came home from the hospital weighing 8 lbs. more than I went in :( Still weight 8 lbs. more today, how fast will this come off?? Also, took my first really good shower today and can't seem to get all the sticky stuff off from all the bandages. Still got sticky stuff all over, what takes it off?? Thanks Debbie:)

I lost weight in the hospital--they didn't give me any double-fudge milkshakes, those food nazis.
I would try some baby oil or even vegetable oil to take off the sticky stuff. It comes off eventually.

I'm just wondering if your 8 lbs. could be fluid retention. Maybe you should call your cardiologist just to check whether you should take lasix (if you are not already taking some).

I think I gained about 10-20lbs the day of surgery. When I was rolled out, everyone said I looked extremely bloated. It was all water. I lost a ton of weight when I was in the ICU because all I could do was pee, and once I got home and EVERYTHING started flowing again, I lost another 10 lbs. I'm down to around or below my pre-surgery weight now (one week out) and they expect me to keep dropping weight.

Also, I have been tracking my weight and I was told by the nursing staff that I should be concerned if I see a gain of 3 or more lbs in a day or two.

Oh yeah,
and I still have adhesive on me one week out. It hurts but the only way I can get it off is to rub at it when it's dry. I keep finding more of it too!!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Peace,
Brian

Debbie, you should check your weight every day and report a gain of 1lb or more- it could be fluid. The baby oil is probably a good suggestion. I remember that when Dick went for his 6 week check with the surgeon, the surgeon's asst. still found some adhesive on his chest.

Yes, baby oil to remove the sticky stuff. Alcohol works also but leaves your skin dry, follow up with moisturizer.

I gained about 9 pounds in the hospital but they were tracking my weight so they gave me 3 IV doses of Lasix over the course of a day and a half and I lost all of that. I have continued to lose weight, slowly, and now am about 15 pounds less than my heaviest weight in the hospital. I was hoping to lose 20-25 lbs (as others have reported)but I guess I will continue to lose and it's only been 2 weeks. My doctor also told me that if I gained more than 2 pounds in a day or 5 pounds in 3 days (something like that) to take a diuretic called Hydrochlorothiazide (which he gave me a script for) but I haven't gained any weight, just continued a rather slow loss of weight. Also, I totally agree with the baby oil thing for removing left over adhesive or that yellow betadine that they cover you with pre-op...it worked for me! Doesn't that first shower feel heavenly? Hope you continue your smooth recovery and I am so glad that the Aleve worked for your leg pain!

I lost weight in hospital, have since put it back on and then some  ...

I agree with the others, sounds like you have gained some water-weight there...probably time to tell your Doctor about this and ask them to help you lose it with a Diuretic.

Sticky Stuff

Sticky Stuff

Debbie,
Regarding the sticky stuff-wish I had heard of the "oil", I tried everything. I think I may have looked at it from a different angle though. Some of the things (paint thinner, goof-off, alcohol, adhesive tape remover, nail polish remover, rubbing) I still had that damn sticky stuff on me a month later. WD-40 ended up working and boy did all these things sure toke a toll on my skin, I don't suggest any of them to others. Posted them to say they don't work to well. The oil sounds really nice to your skin to, soft and supple sounds like. I was about 20 lbs. lighter when I left the hosp. so cant help you there.

I lost 15 lbs after the surgery until week three when I had a fluid retention problem and gained it all back and more. Then I got the fluid drained surgically, and I was back down the 15 lbs again. Now, almost 2 years later I've still only regained 10 of those back.

I'm with the others. I lost about 15 lbs - but it wasn't all in the hospital. I guessed that the healing process takes a ton of calories, and my appetite wasn't enough to keep up.

Fifteen plus!!! My wife said I was so swollen in ICU she had to check for my birthmark to make sure it was me.;) I had to wear sweats for a week. It was obviously water weight and came off quickly.

I lost maybe 15 pounds.

During my surgery, I gained 15 pounds. They had me on a scale immediately after bringing me to step down unit. They would not let me leave the hospital until most of that was gone. I never gained it back.
When I returned home, I was just about my pre-op weight and I stayed there. I was a healthy weight going into surgery.

20 pounds, I think. I was a size 12 when I went in (had dieted down from a 14 pre-diagnosis, but still was wearing about 10 in CHF fluids) but my dear spouse had to go to Wal Mart to buy me MEN's extra large pjs so I had something to cover my nekkidness when I got out of ICU. NOTHING FIT! Heck, none of my pjs would even GO ON!
2 surgeries in 8 days just bloated me up (valve then pacemaker 'cause I couldn't get off the external one). My skin hurt from all that water. It all came off pretty fast, and I kept losing afterwards because healing takes lots of calories. Now I'm down to a size 6. Yeah Weight Watchers!

Thanks everyone for the posts, I know the 8 lbs. is water weight I feel so bloated in my ankles. Doc. said to report extra weight if it goes up 2 lbs. in one day or 5 lbs. in a week. I see him next Wed. if I'm still the same I want something to get rid of the water. I know it's all water because i have'nt hardly eaten anything all week, surgery was a week ago today, just don't want to eat, nothing tastes good. I am feeling like alittle ice cream though :p maybe I'll send someone to get some. I used rubbing alcohol on the stickys that worked, followed up with baby oil. Have a good day everyone Debbie :)
