I see where some of you have bragged about how quickly your surgery went having valve replacement. I've watched them do it on OR-Live. So just how much more time would/should it take to do an AVR, repair Aortic Aneurism and a triple arterial by-pass? My wife said I was in surgery all day...From like 6:30 to 4:30

Thanks
JohnnyV.

P.S. anyone have a link for a by-pass surgery?

Johnny - not exactly the same, but I had AVR and a quad bypass. My wife said I was in surgery from 8 AM till about 3 PM. The doctor told me when I woke it was more like 5 1/2 hours. So obviously there is some disconnect here. I never was able to find out how long I was on the machine. BUT - I also was completely clear-headed from the moment I woke up. Never had a bit of the confusion, atention span, reading dexterity, etc., that so many report on.

Johnny,

Apparently here is variation among surgeons. My cardio said that my value and root replacement ("Bentall's procedure") typically can take up to 11 hours, but my surgeon (whom he very strongly recommended) can do it in half that. My surgery lasted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doing it expertly but in less time is important because it leaves you on the heart-lung machine for a shorter time and therefore less prone to the "pumphead" syndrome.

not sure...

not sure...

I can't really contribute much to this thread *yet*, but I was told my AVR & aneuryism repair will take 3 to 4 hours.......no bypass needed as far as I know.....

I'm having a hard time believing my procedure will only take that long, but I hope it's right. I was expecting more like 6+ hours.....

Chris
