I was just wondering if everyone could answer this question.

How long was it before your heart rate returned to normal?

I am 3 months post-op and still at 100 while resting. I was at 65 before I went in. They are telling me it could take 6-12 months before my heart rate is normal again. So I thought I'd see how other people fared!

Thanks,
-Tim

Hi TIm
Mine took awhile. I think at least 8 weeks. But, pre-op it was pretty fast.

Just think that your heart is so happy to be unburdened with the stress of a bad valve that it is like an unbridled horse.
(I know that is a pretty cheesy metaphor, but it gives you the picture.)

My heart rate was always fast during cardiac rehab. It seemed to be just me. Another guy there, a CABG patient, had a resting heart rate half of mine.

elevated HR after surgery

elevated HR after surgery

Tim -

I'm just over a year past MV surgery, and my resting HR is in the 90's. Before surgery, it was in the high 50's. Exercise HR is elevated too.

I'm in search of an explanation/prognosis for this. If you come across the answer, please let me know (I'll do likewise).

Thanks
Bill

I'm right behind you in surgery 10/24 my heart rate is still up there, are you taking any meds to slow it down???
I am, b.i.d, my resting is about 96 to 104, my exercise HR doesn't get much higher, 118.

I also had a rapid heart rate before surgery they control it with sectral-beta blocker (also TNTC-PVCs) I'm taking the same meds only double strength now.

I have a mechanic mitral valve also, who know if that makes a difference???

Hi!

More input - My husbands heart rate goes as low as 30 while sleeping, and as high as 200+, when he walks. Have NO idea what would happen if he pushed it....even a bit. He is in chronic a-fib, and yes, he does take a beta blocker. - Marybeth

I'm curious about the fast heart rate issue, too

I'm curious about the fast heart rate issue, too

I had a mitral valve repair almost six months ago and have a resting HR in the high 90s. I'm on a calcium channel blocker and a beta blocker. This is something I've been concerned about for a while. My cardiologist doesn't seem as concerned as I do. I have my six month appointment on Friday and I'm interested to see what he says. In the mean time, I'm with everyone else - if you hear anything . . .

seems to be okay?

seems to be okay?

Yes, I've been told that it's no concern as long as my resting rate is not in the 120 range. 90-100 doesn't seem to conern anyone but me! :)

I've been told I can excercise now without restriction and get up to about 160-165 or so when I go for a 20 minute jog which seems farily normal.

I'm keeping an eye on my resting rate though. It may not concern my dootors, but it bothers me :)
