Got a nose bleed last night that just wouldn't quit so I finally went to the ER at 2AM and got remedied briefly with a "nose rocket!" That's what they called it. Mr. Ross, I think you have been through something similar? They said this rocket was developed specifically for Coumadin patients.

They sent me home after about an hour with my rocket securely in place. At 6AM (after a sneeze!) the rocket moved and caused the bleeding to continue so I went back to the ER. Luckily, I dodged a second rocket. A terrific ER doc took more time and cauterized some more veins in my nose and put in a much smaller gauze plug.

I had just had my INR checked on Monday and it was 2.2 so we weren't too concerned about that causing the problem which was limited to just one nostril.

This is the first winter since surgery that I've experienced so many nose bleeds. This one was a doozie. Does anyone have any dry nose/nose bleed remedies? I'm going to get another humidifier and point it right in my face tonight.

Cheers!

My sister-in-law is supposed to email me today with a recipe for nasal dryness relief. With me snorting this oxygen and dry air, my nose is bleeding almost all the time. Yes, it does seem to be more then usual this year.

Whenever I get the recipe, I'll post it or email it to you. ;)

Joe gets nosebleeds pretty good too. He's got a "bleeder" in one side of his nose. He uses saline nasal spray often and that helps a lot by preventing the need to blow the nose too hard. It clears out all the mucous secretions gently and thoroughly. I use it too. Winter around here is bad for your nasal passages because of the dry heat inside.

If you Google "nosebleed", there are about a ton of tips. I'm not sure that they could all be used by heart patients or by those on Coumadin. But it's worth Googling.

Got our February Consumer Reports this week. In it is a small article about a med that stops nosebleeds. CR did a test on how well it works, maybe another similar product too.
Article mentioned it being for people on anti-coagulants. Think it mentioned the need to find out what causes nosebleeds, too.

Maybe this is what they used on Perry??

I am so sorry Perry. Was just wondering how you were doing since you last mentioned the nose bleed.

It quickly came to mind when I "felt" like one was going to come on myself today. Had "the feeling" 3-4 times this winter with nothing coming.

Actually took paper towles with me in the car just in case.

Funny thing...this never happened to me in TN. Our air must be very very dry in this part of the country.

Check into one of those cool mist humidifiers. You can purchase one at any Target, drugstore, etc. Might just pull ours out tonight.

Hope you are doing much better. Keep yourself hydratedl!

PS. Ask the doc if you can use Ocean Mist saline to keep the inside of your nose moist

Hi Perry,

Luckily I haven't had a bad nose bleed since before surgery. In fact that was the first one and last I ever had. It was in Aug 2000. I attributed it after the fact, to the discovery of needing valve surgery, which I found out in Oct of 2000. Anyway, I can sypathize with you because the ER was no fun at all!

The past few weeks though I have had a lot of times I'd would have small bloodclots in the muscus when blowing my nose. This is the first year its happened since I had surgery in March 2001. Must be cause the air is so dri and colder than what we've had in the past few years. My cardio did tell me I could use the Ocean Mist Saline spray, so I do. Like Gina said, ask your doc if you can too. I hope you're feeling better.

OK how about Gov Arnold as Dutch in Predator: "If it bleeds ve can kill it."

My Nose Thanks You

My Nose Thanks You

I actually went to the ER for the third time in one day. They were wagering whether or not I'd come back a 4th time.

6 feet of gauze (seriously!) jammed up the nasal canal did it and a prescription for a pain killer and antibiotics and I'm doing OK for now. My face hurts from all the nose jobs. ENT came by and said the ER docs did good on the last job, so hopefully Monday when I see the ENT again, it all comes out with no more complications. I was bleeding majorly bad, but I was sure glad to be in the ER-they took wonderful care of me. Contrarily, my blood tests were all pretty positive, the INR was 2.64 and other tests were of no concern. While I felt like I lost a quart, they said I actually lost very little.

Was told to do nothing the rest of the weekend so I'm watching the golf channel and trying to sleep.

Got a new Halls Humidifier going too.

Will definitely ask about the Ocean Mist Saline Spray.

Perry,
I hope today your ER trips are at 0. I had a friend who got frequent bad nose bleeds. They ended up cauterizing the vessel they felt was the problem.

I use saline nasal spray daily. At night, especially, my sinuses get so dry it hurts to breath and sometimes will cause irritation enough to bleed. The spray helps a lot.

When I was a young pharmacist working in a hospital, a guy asked me to work in his store one evening when he had an emergency. A customer came in and asked me for some "Ocean Spray Nasal Mist". Well, I had never heard of it and I asked, "Are you sure that you want to spray cranberry juice up your nose? That has got to hurt!"

What you said about not losing much blood even with three nosebleeds is very true. That is why I tell people not to worry much about whether or not one is serious. You can lose about 2 pints before it gets serious. Nobody will sit there and watch that much blood run out before doing something. You will become impatient and do domething long before it becomes serious.

"watching the golf channel and trying to sleep."

Ahhhhhhhh man, I bet you a totally bummed out Perry
:D

Sorry to hear you went back again. Be better and please keep us posted.
