It's me again.

The nurses checked me post-ablation with an echo and chest X-ray for pleural effusion, but how do I know if I have it, and can it develop later after the surgery?

Thanks,
Debi

In my Triassic age book, which I happen to have out(lucky-you!!),the
only symptom mention is hypoxia,SOB,etc. If I see anything else, I'll
post again.

What do you mean by "later after surgery"? How much time is "later"?

I've had pleural effusion. The fluid prevents your lung or lungs from fully expanding. You may have trouble taking a deep breath, or you may have trouble taking a particular type of deep breath, or you may be generally short of breath. You may feel pain or pressure in your side or back.

Make sure they know what is causing the pleural effusion before they drain it, if they drain it. I went through the draining and the fluid came right back because they had not identified the cause.

And if you get it drained, tell them that you don't freaking care what their policy is, you won't do it without a sedative. I know several members of this group will agree with me!

Severe shortness of breath, mainly because taking a breath hurts like hell. You may even feel or hear water slushing in your chest. It's bizarre, but you'll no doubt know if you have it.
