Has anyone here had any experience with problems associated with using a hot tub and heart problems? My husband announced a couple of days ago that he wants to put in a hot tub outside off our deck. He seems to have his heart set on this. Just wondering if I'll be able to use it. I've looked on the internet and saw warnings about heart patients using them, but not really any specifics other than blood pressure concerns. Any comments would be appreciated. LINDA

I was told (I think this is pretty common) not to use a hot tub for at least six weeks after surgery. No restrictions after that. The reason why you see warnings is that a hot tub is naturally going to raise your body temperature, which generally makes your heart work harder. I have noticed that I start to get palpitations whenever I get a fever, which is basically the same thing going on.

My wife and I love our hot tub and use it frequently. No issues. I also use the tub at the gym. I avoid them, especially the public one, when I have an open wound, to avoid infection.

OK Ross...this question took some thought. Knowing and loving you as we do, this could be a loaded question.:D I will certainly post pics of the hot tub when it's finished, but will have to think about posting one with me in it. I would hate to scare anyone. Of course, I guess in a hot tub, one is submerged in water up to the chin, so I just might consider posting one with me.;) LINDA

Nathan was also told 6 wks to allow the incision to heal. An eariler thread mentioned less than 102 degrees I believe. I have a hard time talking Nathan into turning ours down, he likes it at 103.

Had a spa attached to our pool in California (really miss it) and we had it set at 102. Used it almost every night and I never had any problems.

I appreciate all the input. Sounds like I'll be able to enjoy the spa along with my hubby. I've always preferred cool pool water and therefore never really ventured into spas much. Plus I guess the warning posted on public spas about heart patients made me think twice about going in. Sounds like there are quite a few valvers that like the spa with no complications, so I guess I'll learn to like it. My husband has started to experience some sore joints (goes along with our age I guess), and he is so into trying to stay fit (he works out everyday and also bikes), so he thinks the warm soaks in a spa will help his sore muscles and joints.
