I have had quite a few cardiac caths before, about 4 or 5, but have never been hospitalized for one.

This time, in prep for my AVR scheduled for 5/29, the cardiac cath crew say I need to be hospitalized the day before through the day after in order to medicate me to protect my kidneys (my creatinine level has been high for about 9 months and the last one was 1.47).

However, my surgeon's assistant says that they should be able to give me the same medicine to take at home without hospitalization.

Anyone know anything about this issue?

Thanks!

I can't offer anything with regards to your medications, sorry.

I was hospitalized for my cath the day before my MVR as a convenience. That way they could schedule me for the 7am surgery and I wouldn't have to battle DC traffic to get to the hospital at that time. I think the cath gave them the 'cover' they needed with the insurance company. I was just as happy to check in the afternoon b4 the surgery.

I wish you all the best,
Ruth
