Where is the best place to get hospital data such as infection rates, as well as surgeon outcome data on AVR and the like?
Thanks,
Bobco

You can try a search at CMS, CDC and JCAHO web sites for the hospital infection and mortality rates. As far as the surgeon outcome data, this is kept internally at the hospital and for protection against ambulance chaser fishing expeditions, you won't see it outside of that arena. Best way is to ask the surgeon; I've never been dishonest or witheld such information. Surgery has risks. Your state medical licensing board may have a site with malpractice claims made, but that is not really a good indicator of the surgeons skill or success rate.

Check Ins. Co. Web Site.

Check Ins. Co. Web Site.

My insurance company web site (United Health Care) has mortality rates of surgeries at different hospitals. The information is only available via an insured's login to the web site.

Check your insurance carrier to see if they have that info online.

I don't think thats a fair comparison though. A larger hospital that takes on high risk patients will get dinged because a smaller hospital won't take those cases. They may be a better hospital, but will show a higher mortality because of handling more complex cases.
