Are there any preferences for brands of home testing kits? I have brochures for two different brands, one is Coagucheck (sp?) and the other one came from the surgeon but I can't remember the brand right now.

Coaguchek is not marketing them to individuals at this time, only to professionals (doctors, hospitals, Coumadin clinics).
There are 2 available to individuals at this time: INRatio and ProTime 3. I've had my ProTime 3 for almost 2 years, am satisfied with it. It's a little larger than the INRatio. The INRatio takes a little less blood.
QAS can send you information on both. There's a link to QAS here at this website.
PT/INR home-testing machines aren't inexpensive (my insurance carrier was billed $2,400, I think, and paid 100%). Some insurance policies cover a portion of the cost.
Having your own PT/INR machine gives a lot of peace of mind -- it's like having the ball & chain cut from your ankle!
