Has anyone out there became pregnant while on coumadin? I know that is is harmful for the fetus, but what if you are taking it before you realize you are pregnant? I have read that between 6 and 9 weeks is when it begins to harm the fetus, so if you bridge off to heprin before then, it should be fine? Anyone have any experiences with this?

Hi Billie Jo

I can't really help you with an answer to your question, but if you move your post to the anti-coagulation forum you might get more response.
Lots of members who take Warfarin and are very experienced in its use read that forum and would be willing to help you with information....I think from memory there are even some people on this site who have had babies while on Warfarin...

Hopefully you're going to get a variety of responses that might help you.

What does your doctor say about it?

Good luck, anyway

Bridgette:)

pregnancy on warfarin

pregnancy on warfarin

Pregnancy used to be considered an absolute contradiction but the incidence of warfarin associated embryopathy(foetal developmenal damage) is very low with doses of warfarin under 5mg daily.Hope that helps.

Hi Billiejo,

I got pregnant while taking coumadin. I was about four and a half weeks pregnant when I took a positive test. I switched to lovenox for the next eight months and my baby was born perfectly healthy and normal. My mechanical heart valve stood up perfectly. The hematologist said it wouldn't be a problem for me to do it again as long as it was planned the next time so we could start the lovenox before conception. One thing I want to make so clear -- I have an aortic mechanical valve and no health problems so I am much lower risk for clotting and clogging than someone with an MVR and/or connective tissue disorders or blood problems.
