Hello..hope someone had an idea about this..my INR went up to 5.1 Fri and today at retest was at 7..I am now instructed no more coumadin until further notice and re-ck on Mon. Now I have been on Coumadin for 12 yrs and once in awhile..almost seasonally, it will vary and rise up to 3 but never such a big jump. They almost wanted to admit me to the hospital but I promised to stay put and out of harms way since any bleeding now would be serious stuff. Any thoughts?? And is there anything you can eat to bring it down? Just wondering..never had an issue and forgot to ask dr ..

Hi Dane,

Is there anything you can think of that might have caused it to rise? Are you on any new meds or is there a chance you might have doubled up on a dose? It is highly unusual for the INR to climb like that for no reason.

The only thing you can take to bring it down is Vit. K but I would not do so without doctor's instructions.

Unless you accidentally took and doubled your dose or introduced another medication recently, this would be near impossible. They shouldn't get harried over 7. Maybe 10 or with bleeding, but 7 isn't so bad. At this point, do as instructed. If those tests were right, you should be low Monday, depending on how much you normally take.

Thanks and keep any suggestions coming.. no new meds added Except a 1/2 of a tylenol PM on Wed which he said shouldn't create such a jump..and speaking of Jumps..I do ride horses..just not this weekend!! I am keeping it simple til Mon..I have a pill sorter and I don't think I messed up doses..feel fine anyway..not playing with any sharp  objects!!

This is where a retest at a different facility with a different instrument would be nice.

Where were your tests taken?
What kind of test? (Fingerstick? Instrument? Veinous Draw / Lab?)

It is very unusual for INR to rise that rapidly except when there is an extreme drug interaction (amiodarone comes to mind). This makes me wonder if there isn't something wrong with those tests...

Do you have a Home Test instrument?
or know someone who does?
