Hi folks ...I've been away on holiday for a week and was pleased to see upon my return that everyone seems to be progressing well ...those that had surgery lately that is ...well done to you all ..
I have a question for the oldies ( as in surgery time that is ..nothing personal :) it's been 7 months since my surgery and I am well ...nothing wrong heart wise ..(or so I think) ..but when I was away on holiday this week I had terrible trouble with my shoulders ...a lot of pain ..especially in my left shoulder ...it meant that I tired easily and if I did a lot of walking it got really sore ...sorry to moan but I did feel it took the edge off my trip..I know I have asked this before ..but I did expect it to be gone by now ...is it worth having a word with my GP ..or is there not anything she could do ?..( hate to be seen as a hypocondraic)
Hope everyone is feeling tiptop
Thanks
Scottie

Scottie,
What exercises have you done to rehab those muscles, tendons and ligaments?

I'm almost a year and a half post surgery, and I still occasionally feel some discomfort from when they spread me wide open.

I think I have it fixed, though, at least temporarily. I've spent time this week cleaning up all the branches from last weekend's ice storm. Yesterday, I spent three and a half hours burning the branches. Too much work outside in the spring. Now I hurt everywhere, not just the shoulders. So problem solved.

I think I'd say something about it. I know I'm having problems with mine, but I felt a pop from the collar bone into the shoulder socket and I think I popped something out of place. Tis painful for sure. You may need to see a Chiropractor.

Hi Scottie,
You and I had our surgeries pretty close together. I remember months after my surgery (when I was feeling better) I started to get pain and soreness in my shoulders. Mostly my right, then later on I noticed some in my left. Sometimes it had to do with the way I was sleeping and also with certain things I was doing. Sometimes I don't think we realize it, but we can still over do. I think it is a good idea to check with your doc, it is always better to be safe than sorry, but I am thinking it is probably just normal healing etc...I was at the cardio the other day and he told me that I may always feel some pinching, twinges, soreness etc...for the rest of my life, due to this surgery. He told me not to worry about it unless it was bothersome. You know your body and what feels right and what doesn't. If you are at all uncomfortable with this, you should talk to your doc. I think we are all going to have to live with these aches and pains for a very long time. Good Luck and Take Care! Keep us updated on how you are doing.

Scottie, Because I live on and run a farm, my doctor advised me of some exercises to do (after 3 months) to build up my back and shoulders. I have conbtinued and added some new (3 years later). As I get older I am noticing that I slouch more at the desk and couch...no it can't be age related at my young age! lol The exercises do help...besides have to have good upper body strength to throw that Harley around...how about get it off the kickstand! I'd check into mild strength building exercises. Good luck.

I agree with Jean. Exercises to rehab not only the muscles, but the tendons and ligaments can make a huge difference. I'm 10 months post op, and have no twinges, pains or aches at all. Zero. However, I did go through the rehab program at the hospital for 6 weeks, and after my sternum was fully healed, I started with light weight training. The exercise that really "turned the corner" was resuming pushups, which hit the chest, shoulders, back and arms.

Also, throwing my motorcycle around might have helped too!

Having been through a serious car accident and having had some sports injuries over the years, I am amazed at how much the body can be reconditioned after major trauma. But it doesn't do it without some serious time exercising and stretching.
