Veronica

Hi, my name is Veronica and let me just say that I am glad I found this site.
I am a 33yr old femail who just had a 2nd AVR on Dec. 30, 2003. My first AVR was 13 yrs ago so I was due for another. I thought I just had a bad case of the flu that was going around during the holidays. I ended up going to the ER and a few hours later I was told my tissue valve was very much leaking and 3 days later I was in surgery. The first valve was a tissue one this time due to the condition of my heart once in the OR my dr told my husband they needed to put in a mechanical valve. What bumms me out is that my hubbie and I have been married 3 years and we had just decided to start trying to concieve. He has 3 kids from a previouse marriage but I have none. We had been trying to concieve for a year and were planning to see a fertility specialist at the begining of this year. BUT...now that I am taking Coumadin I have been reading that having kids while on this med is not a good idea. My dr told me it could still be done but I would have to be monitored very carfully and see a high risk GYN. Is there anyone out there that has maybe gone through a pregnancy while on Coumadin or know of any research? I am also having trouble keeping my INR levels normal. Not sure what I am doing wrong but it's getting very frustrating. Also, does anyone know of a good website that has low sodium/fat recepies? Well just wanted to say hello to everyone and also ask a few questions. Sorry for the long email. Tootles, Vl

WELCOME!

WELCOME!

Hey Veronica,
Welcome to this Great Site. Glad to hear you are doing OK after your 2nd AVR surgery.

How often are they testing your INR? Sometimes it takes time to get it adjusted. I would sure let my Cardiologist or Dr. know about it.
Here are a couple of sites for Low Sodium and Low Fat Recipes.
www.healthydietplans.com
www.CHFPatients.com

There will be others that will be coming along to welcome you and will have more info for you. The weekend is kind of slow.
Take Care

Hi Veronica-

Welcome to the site. Lots of wonderful people here.

We have a member who is an expert on Coumadin. His name is Al Lodwick and he views the Coumadin forum, so if you post your Coumadin questions there, he'll no doubt answer you.

His website has all the information about Coumadin.

Veronica,
Welcome! I'm sorry I can't provide you with any detailed information regarding pregnancy on Coumadin. I can give you some encouragement, however, in that I have an acquaintance who had a successful pregnancy after she had a mechanical valve implanted. Her surgery was, I think, in '86 and her son is now 11! This is not to suggest that it would be a piece of cake, but if you're determined and can find a good, high risk OB/GYN to work with you, I think you could bear your own child. Good luck!

Welcome Veronica. I also am a fairly new member although I have ditched my "rookie" status with over 20 posts :D

I too have a mechanical aortic valve and have similar questions regarding coumadin. I'm currently averaging 2.2 on my pro-time tests and my cardio seems OK with that. I also struggled with keeping the food levels consistent however I'm getting better.

As mentioned earlier, check out the Coumadin link as there is great information on how to effectively manage the drug. I also posted a new thread on a new drug that will apparently hit the market soon called Exanta. If successful, this might be the drug that eventually replaces Coumadin and might prove more effective for people wanting to conceive. Hopefully, it's not all hype.

THANK YOU

Hello Veronica

Welcome to a wonderful site. I'm Evelyn, whose husband, Tyce, had AVR almost 2 years ago. I was lucky enough to find this site prior to Tyce's surgery and it was truly my saving grace.

So sorry I can't help you with the pregnancy issue...but I'm sure someone will hop on here and give you some advice. I'm sure it would be a high-risk pregnancy...without a doubt!

Everyone here is great and will help you out all they can. Again, WELCOME!!!

Evelyn
