just curious, what would be the situation of a hemophiliac mechanical valve recipient? presumably they would have a naturally high INR level, higher than our prescribed ranges.?

so i guess they would not be taking warfarin but may still have to take a reduced dosage of a clotting agent?

my guess is hemophiliacs do not have "thin blood" just like us warfarin takers to not have thin blood?

just curious

When I was grumbling to my GP about being diagnosed with Very severe Stenosis a week before my AVR and feeling sorry for myself he said " Look, you're going to be mended, you'll have to take ACT drugs but you'll be mended and fighting fit after a few months", then added "you'll be surprised how many people have serious health problems but with the right medication and attitude can lead a normal life, for example I'm sure you didn't realise I'm a haemophiliac ?"
I didn't, but this completely threw me and all I could think to say was "Blimey, and they let you practice this close to an infant school !?"
Doh...He just looked at me with a frown, as if to say...... I left....

on TV this a.m. referring to lifestyles and proper attitudes. One of the participants in the Iditarod Sled Dog race in Alaska is a Type 1 diabetic. This race takes place over 1,000 miles of Alaskan wilderness and takes 8+ days to complete. Mushers run most of the way, dogs burn as much as 9,000 calories a day. Diabetic competitor hopes he is an inspiration to others. I think any one attempting that race is an inspiration.

This mention of hemophiliacs is very interesting, something I've never thought much about. As all of us are familiar with the term "blood thinner" when referring to warfarin do you suppose there are "blood thickeners" for them to help stop bleeding or do they depend solely on transfusions? When they have mechanical valves it's hard to know what to think.

I don't think you'd find a known Hemophiliac on Coumadin or with a mechanical valve. I guess there have been some where Hemphilia was not disovered until after surgery and they run their INR between 1.5 and 2. Sorry, I lost the link or I'd post it.

God I love the misinformation campaigns:

http://heartlab.robarts.ca/qa/qa8.html

"mechanical valve recipients must take anti-coagulant drugs chronically, effectively making them borderline hemophiliacs."
Well, Ross, the founder of that web page, Mike Scott, sounds like he's unable to take our calls. I guess we could try to contact the University and ask them to edit that page, although it's hard to say who would have the access to do so.

the University of Western Ontario is a major cardio-thoracic teaching hospital in London, Ontario. Patients are referred there from all over the province.

Pamela, My PCP, following my valve replacement surgery, told me I was borderline hemophiliac and he's not associated Western

Ross,

What specifically do you consider misinformation? I must have missed something.

Look up Hemophilia. They are implying that we bleed for no reason excessively. We do? Not that I know of. Hemophilias have little or no clotting factors in their blood. We people on Coumadin that are not Hemophiliacs, do have clotting factors, it's simply inhibited from beginning so quickly. They will bleed until given clotting factors, we will not.
