I seem to have no resistance against germs, I wash my hands like a obcessive compulsive person, but I'm still getting sick.

I take a routine multi-vitamin and a calcium supplement, I eat plenty of fruits and vegtables, even the ones we should avoid (hence the high coumadin dose-10mg per day)

I work in health care, but this newest cold was gotten at a seminar weekend from a co-worker who was sick. I finished a 10 day regimen of antibiotics 2 weeks ago, and now I've picked-up another germ UGH!

Do you take vitamin C, Zinc (it upsets my stomach) most herbal remedies interfers with the coumadin. Help, any suggestion would help! Winter is not even here yet, oh and I got my flu shot 2 weeks ago

Thanks in advance

Not a lot a fun Terry:( First year after surgery found myself sicker than ever during the cold season. Figured a few things out.

Washing your hands obsessively and with antibacterial soap (big no no) will kill of the 'good bacteria cultures' on your hands. Just like antibiotics causing a yeast infections inside your body.

Spent so much time on antibiotics it was ridiculous. Next season I ditched the antibacterial soaps and washed when necessary. Not every time I touched something in a public place. Keep your hands away from your eyes and face. And oh yes....go get yourself a nice supply of Zicam nasal gel. Use it at first onset of your virus. Follow the package directions and it works like a charm.

When it does not work...it's usually bacterial in nature. Which is not very often. I am in contact with 100's of children every week and my illness have been to a minimum since discovering the Zicam. Though, I have had a nasty one already. Peditricians office I am suspecting. Can't win them all.

Good luck to you.

Hi Terry-

Joe went through some periods of time when he had several colds in succession. It can really sap your strength.

Being in the healthcare field doesn't help, because you're around germs a lot.

I swear that Joe picked up a lot of stuff from the chairs and magazines in the hospital and various doctor's offices. He's in places like that a lot, and there's always someone coughing and hacking, and who knows what else. So I got him some antibacterial gel for the car. And we have some all over the house.

I do believe that it's helped to cut down on so many infections.

Hope things improve soon.

There is 60mg in my multi of Vit. C, how much do you take???

Gina
I don't use antibacterial soap just regular soap and warm water to the tune of happy birthday, I've heard about the misuse of the antibacterial products, thanks for the suggestion of Zicam, I've never tried it, it's on my list now.

I use to have great resistant pre-surgery, I'm just hoping I can build it back up.

I haven't returned to Pediatrics because of this, but Family Practice and Internal Medicine aren't much better. I do carry and use handy wipes, always have, I wish the sick patients would do the same.

Can you take a break?

Can you take a break?

I ran into this in August - September this year. I think it was probably triggered by a cold, and exacerbated by allergies. My doc put me on singulair and Flonase. What really seemed to work was going on vacation and getting plenty of rest and sleep (oh, yeah - it was a cruise north so lots of fresh ocean air, too).

But I think jus the vacation breaks the cycle of reinfection and gives your immune system a chance to catch up.

Just a thought.

(And I'm with Gina - keep hands away from nose, mouth and eyes!!!)

I take 500mg "C" twice a day. Didn't get a cold for about a year. Just came down with a doozy three weeks ago. It eventually turned into bacterial infection. I chaulk it up to weak immune system following hernia surgery.

I tried working through it and finally put myself "down" for five miserable days. Combination of Tylenol and Sudafed helped a little. "Halls" lozenges were about my best relief. I have found that a very brisk walk helps clear the sinuses naturally. Not perfect, but beneficial in more ways than one. Then its nap time.

Walk walk walk breathe breathe breathe nap nap nap.:)

I'm so sorry that you keep getting colds. I can't imagine going through what I just went through a couple more times in succession.

If you feel sure its only a cold...tuff it out with out meds for three days, before seeking help.

Med,

Agreed.
I toughed it out for three days, then went to the doctor. He said, "Yup you got a cold." He gave me a prescription for amoxicillin and told me to take it if the cold didn't clear in three more days. Sure enough in about 2 days the drainage turned all kinds of colors and I started on the amoxicillin. A week later, I'm much better, still with some sinus pressure.
Thanks.
