Hi all... been awhile since i posted or have come on board to read posts... I am just7 weeks post op..it's been somewhat of a rocky road..( and not the ice cream either ...bummer )
I read on a number of posts how folks were having stomach pain , nausea and some with continued issues with constipation. I had that too.. and about 2 weeks ago the stomach pain was so severe that i was vomiting . I had not been able to eat much for weeks due to the unrelenting nausea from the drugs . I called my Natuapathic DR. and she said , Marige , your stomach lining is raw from all the meds..Start taking Slippery Elm before each meal. She recommended 2 teaspoons mixed with water . I mixed it with plain yogurt. Let tell you .. that has been a Godsend. At last my stomach is healing and i can eat soft foods . Since surgery on May 26th, i have lost 22lbs .. mainly due to not being able to eat . Not the ideal way to lose. For those of you who are suffering with stomach pain and nausea , please try the slippery Elm ..it works , use it about 15 min. before each meal .

The first few days post op I began to question the different meds that I was taking, but the nurse explained
that the stool softener and Zantac (neutralizes excess stomach acid) were necessary for proper healing and
recovery from the stresses of surgery on our digestive system. Fortunately once I got home all was well.

It is worth noting that some herbals have effects and interactions with our prescription meds.
My herbal guide book indicates that Slippery Elm shouldn't be taken at the same time as other meds as it may
delay their absorption.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

I agree that we should clear the use of all herbal remedies with our doctors if we are on any other medications. There can be interactions.

Part of my problem was caused by a change in meds for GERD. Before surgery I was taking Prilosec. After I came out of surgery I found out that the Hospital did not stock Prilosec, so they just changed me over to Nexxium. It didn't work, so I was worse off than average -- instead of giving me Zantac (which would have worked fine), I was given a non-functional med for a pre-existing condition. So, in addition to my GERD going wild, I had all the reactions to the meds at surgery, too. What a mess. Once I finally convinced one of the night nurses to scour the hospital and get me all the Rolaids he could, things started to level out.

Since surgery I have switched back to Zantac. I have to take 3 tabs a day instead of one capsule, but it keeps things under control.

I was having severe digestive and nausea issues due to the use of narco pain killers while in the hospital. They then put me on Tramadol which is a powerful version of ibuprofen I believe, and since then I have had no nausea or vomitting. You may want to check with your doc to see if that is suited for you. Every Body is different.
