I had aortic valve replacement almost 20 years ago, I'm 72 now, and was never told anything before heading into it. Just a note here for women, if you're facing open heart surgery and wear an underwire bra it won't be comfortable for you to go home with that, so get a SPANX bra for after-wards, it's something a heart surgeon or cardiologist will never tell you. As soon as I could drive I was out shopping for the stretchy bra - there was no computer at the time to just order one online! My how times have changed!:smile2:

When you go for your surgery, you may well want to schedule it for when you do not have your period.
However, your body may have other ideas. My surgery was scheduled for mid cycle, but in ICU my period arrived. My nurse told me this was very common.
