There was a nice story about a surgeon performing heart surgery in Sudan. It was aired on the US program "60 Minutes": http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/free-surgery-saves-childrens-lives-in-africa/
A young girl's life is saved by a valve replacement surgery after contracting rheumatic fever. I thought I'd share with the forum. It makes you realize how lucky we are to have been able to have been saved by these surgeries when there are many in the world who are not.

There is a film that was recently made on this - here is the web site and trailer. I have not seen the movie but am looking forward to doing so. Quite the story. And so tragic to hear that 300,000 people - most of which are kids - die in Africa every year from this.

Thanks for posting these links, I really enjoyed watching both of these. It reminded me of my first surgeon who used to spend his vacations going to 3rd world countries performing heart surgery on children for free.
