I'm wondering if any of you know much about heart rate and if that can be a sign of anything.

Before I found out about my heart, when I was doing cardio on a regular basis my resting heart rate was always between about 75-85. Whenever I wasn't doing my regular cardio it was in the mid 80's. Anyway, i've stopped doing cardio for about a month or longer now and when I went to my doctor yesterday my pulse was 68, I mentioned that I was suprised and she told me last time I was in it was 60. That is so much lower than it ever used to be, and I would think it would go up not down, considering my lack of cardio these days. Do you guys think this is anything I have to worry about?

Also, I have quit smoking for 6 months I think it is now and my fiance mentioned that he thinks that can lower your heart rate. I will bring this up to my cardio next month at my next appt, but until then I was just curious if any of you know much about this?

I appreciate any help. Thank You all again for listening.

I would think the same, that your heart rate would drop if your not smoking. I suppose that could do it. Do you have any symptoms of a low heart rate? I think, low heart rate can by a symptom of an arythmia-bracardia ??? I dont know this for sure though.

My husband has a very low heart rate too- resting is ussually high 50 to low 60. But, he doesnt have any heart problems.

Mine is really high(resting 80) but I just had my valve replaced a few months ago.

Carista: quitting smoking will allow your blood to carry more oxygen and cause your heart to not work as hard as it was, so a lower heartrate makes sense. I'll bet your blood pressure's down too. 60 is at the low end of normal and is what one would probably expect for a young, reasonably fit (I remember you at least used to work out), non-smoker. My normal heartrate was in the high 50's to low 60's before I quit running and went on a beta blocker. Now, with the beta blocker it's between 47 and 57 at rest.

Congrats on quitting smoking! I think the improved heart rate is a good thing - not a sign that anything is wrong - I have read that it will be in the 30's for olympic caliber athletes.

Thanks you guys, I feel better about it now. I feel fine, I was just suprised at such a low heart rate that it started to worry me. I'll still check with my cardio when I go see him to make sure but I'm sure it probably does have to do with quitting smoking.

Thanks for your replies and thanks msiwik for the congrats! It's so nice to call myself a non-smoker now, I love it!
