I don't know if anyone posted this already. Clarence Dennis pioneered surgery with the Heart-Lung machine died on July 11 at the age of 96 from congestive heart failure. Dr. Dennis research into the heart-lung machine began in the late 1930s at the U of Minn. Surgeons were trying to figure out how to keep blood flowing to prevent brain damage while they stopped the heart long enough to make repairs.
In April 1951 Dr Dennis performed the first open heart surgery that used the heart lung machine. The patient died hours later. In June 1955, he became the second surgeon in the country to perform a successful open-heart surgery using the heart-lung machine.
