Hi all! I've never been a headache type of person. I'm 9 weeks out, and for the past 3 weeks I've been having headaches. Yesterday I developed a migraine. It started with pain at the base of my head and before I knew it, I was nauseous, and felt so much pain, it just took over. I went to my bed and couldn't move. I awoke today with a headache and am scared of the migraine revisiting. I wish I could take Advil.

So, I have two questions-

1. Is this common?

2. What can I take if this continues? (Tylenol didn't even touch it.)

Thank you,
Summer

Visual disturbances following heart surgery, including migraine auras, but not necessarily headaches, are something which seem a known side effect of open heart surgery, see this thread: http://www.valvereplacement.org/foru...ardiac-surgery But if you have developed severe headaches I would see a doctor about it just to get it checked.

Hope you feel better soon. I used to get migraines (years ago) and not much would help with the pain. Tylenol - paracetamol - is pretty useless for any kind of pain, imho, it doesn't work for everyone. If your stomach is okay you could try ibuprofen ? I still get the visual disturbances including migraine aura that I started getting immediately following AVR, but there's nothing needs doing about them for me.

Summer, That is exactly how it was for me when I had a subdural hematoma (brain bleed). The only time that it would let up was when I layed down. I waited for three days until I couldn't take it anymore, then went to ER. You might ought to see a doctor, and especially if your on warfarin you might want to go to ER.

Edit to add. The only pain medicine that will work is either going to be hydrocodone or tramadol being the two lightest pain meds that your doctor can prescribe. My neurologist also prescribed a skeletal muscle relaxer called methocarbamol that works alright. Tylenol won't do anything, just tell your doc you need some relief. I never ever had a headache before ohs and warfarin, now I have a light one every day.
