Ramya having a baby while on Warfarin/Coumadin can be very very risky and is not advisable. It can, however, be done. You'll need highly specialized doctors to see you through your pregnancy and delivery. You must understand that there is a very good chance that either you or the child could die. This is the reason you need highly specialized doctors working with you. Indian doctors are some of the best, so I'm not sure how hard it would be for you to find them to help.
Ross, Is right, (I'm assuming you got a mechanical valve and so will be taking warfarin the rest of your life. If you have a tissue valve this doesn't apply)
Also beside the chances of death, one of the main problems with coumadin and pregnangcy, is in the very beginning (first couple months) while the baby is developing, there is a HIGH chance of having some pretty bad birth defects, the main one is face deformity.
The highly specialized doctors you SHOULD have on your team IF you want to try would be a high risk OB, a heart doctor who was experience in getting heart paitients thru pregnancy (for the most part, because of the age of most heart patients the heart doctors that usually treat many young adults, would be cardiologists that treat Adults with Congenital heart defects or pediatric cardiologist (since adult with CHD doctors is a relatively newer field, most of the ped cards have much experience with adults with heart defects) You also need anticoagulation experperts since you will probably need switch from coumadin to lovenox, heparin ect thru out the pregnancy.
Even with the best of the best, it is a risk. We've had members who done great and others that have gone thru nightmares. But to get an idea of how to proceed IF you want to get pregnant, and what kind of doctors to get, Search for posts about Willow by her husband and herself. They gave great detail since Willow went thru 2 preganacies, she had big problems, but there is alot of info in their threads Willow did have a MITRAL valve, so it isn't exactly the same but the coumadin mangement would be pretty much the same
ps When I searched anthony and willow are no longer members so it is harder to find the posts I'll give a couple. First I wanted to add, when Anthony started posting, Willow had already had one baby on coumadin and needed Emergency surgery after delivery here is his first post when she was pregnant with her 2nd, explaining everything that happend so far and their research showing what the options were.
