Well my mother had her HC. 3 blockages, looks like by-pass with the AVR. Scheduled May 8th at 8:00 at St. Joesph Heart Institute, Lexington KY. Anybody have both done at same time??? Thanks for all the support...

I put your Mom on the calendar, Shelly and our prayers and best wishes will be with her. I'm sure there are others here who have had both AVR and by-pass and they will be along soon.

Sending prayers and best wishes for your Mom. Yep, I think bypasses are done along with AVR pretty often. I didn't need the bypass, but I am sure others will come along who can speak to that.

I didn't have any blockages, but my surgeon said he was always prepared for whatever he would find once he got "in there". I know an older woman who had 5 bypasses, but no VR. She was fine.

Wishing your mum all the best and hope she as a speedy recovery.

Along with the others, i'd just like to send my best wishes and prayers your way for a successful surgery for your mom.

Sending my best wishes to your Mom for a successful surgery and easy recovery. It is very common for bypasses to be done at the time of valve surgery. Thankfully, I didn't need any but I did ask what would have happened if they found a blockage during my cath.

Thanks for support

Thanks for support

Thanks to each of you for such support and kind words during this scary time. I don't have any siblings so it means alot to have such a support system.

Shelly, that is exactly what we are here for. We are either going through similar situations or have already been through valve surgery... so we really do understand. I was so happy to find this site more than 5 years ago and the people here helped me a lot and have become "my valve family".

It is routine to check for blockages and fix them at the time of valve surgery in hopes of avoiding another heart surgery later on. It may add to the length of surgery but now is definitely the time to have the blockages opened. Please let us know as soon as possible how you mom is doing after surgery. There will be many prayers going up for your family and we will be watching and waiting for word.
