Because of Neuropathy pain in my feet and sciatic nerve pain in my big toe, ankle and thigh I asked my Neurologist about Acupuncture. Here is her answer. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Dear Ms. Pancoast,Im sorry to hear of your troubles. Accupuncture is a nice thought, but would be contraindicated when taking coumadin due to the bleeding risk. Best, Jina Janavs MDNeurology

Many thanks

Many thanks

Jackie:

Thank you for looking into this for me and the other folks here who might benefit from such treatment. Recently I have been having some difficulties that my friend said might benefit from acupuncture.

I am going to my internist next week. Perhaps I can get his opinion. In past he has been open to many possibilities.

Kind Regards,
Blanche

your neurologist either knows nothing about acupuncture, or (due to the
"nice thought" phrase) thinks acupuncturists are quacks.

they might be quacks, or acupuncture may have only a placebo effect.
all i can tell you is it did nothing for me. went to the local hospital for
treatment of a morton's neuroma, the TCM doctor applied needles to
top and bottom of my foot, at ankle, and a few spots along my leg.
occasionally would also apply an electric current to some of the needles.

no pain and no bleeding (and no effect). the needles are very thin, and
as far as i could tell, don't go in very deep. i was not on warfarin at the
time, but even so, i doubt it would be a problem. never even had a
small drop of blood come out.

I had acupunture therapy a few years back for recurring neck & shoulder pain. The needles are hair thin & you do not even feel them or bleed as they are placed on strategic areas of your body.

They do not penetrate deep at all so I know that being on anticogulants will not be an issue so I dispute what your dr is telling you. If you are in doubt of course, ask your cardiologist or PCP & see what they think.

Good luck to you & I hope you feel better soon!

Note: Not to discourage you: the acupunture did not relieve my pain. I had to later start seeing a message therapist & the pain started to go away, slowly.

Thank you for all the thoughts. My PCP is not in the office right so another doctor is answering his emails. She said it was not covered, and patient assistance said it was if my doctor will OK it, thats why I went to my neurologist. After sending the information that Cris sent to VR her first answer was "the Acupuncture Clinic will not see you, it's not my decision". I just got another one saying she had referred me, and we will see what they say. I also told her that I couldn't carry my new Grandbabies because of fear of falling. Maybe thats why she went ahead and referred me, after all that is the most important reason!!! lol I'll let you know what the final decision is.
