I wanted to start an early thread to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving..:) .. I hope all enjoy your family and stay safe..if you are driving, flying, ect...I'm having my family here..at a Lodge....not far from where I live..They serve a beautiful buffet.. Very cozy with a large open fireplace, ect..they are even mentioning the S word..(snow?).....Would love to hear how others are celebrating and what you are having for Thanksgiving dinner? No diets this week..:p Bonnie
 
turkey, broccoli casserole, corn bread dressing (mother's recipe), rolls, sweet potato(e?) souffle, green beans, pumpkin pie, cherry pie, croussants, deviled eggs. We are having Kimberly, Alyssa, Austin, MaKenna, Chandler, Richard, Resa and me... And Miss Sally Sue will hang around with the cats, as close as she can get to the kitchen or table!

Well, Bon, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TOYA'LL, TOO.

We're having Turkey day, not on Thursday, but the following Sunday at my cousin's in VA.....Were planning for Thursday, but we're not closing on the property we bought till the week after Thanksgiving, so we decided to postpone it for a bit and then go to closing the week after.

Turkey, stuffing (both greek and american) cauliflower, peas and carrots, giblet gravy, turnips, smashed potatoes and both pumpkin and apple krisp pie for dessert with ice cream.....

Will only be us and my cousin and her husband---maybe her son, too, if he's not working.
Can't wait.....may you all "GOBBLE TILL YOU WOBBLE!!!"

Ross..I just e-mailed you and told you that my daughter is flying into Ohio tomorrow..and hopefully coming home Wed....and if she gets stuck up there..you can have her for Thanksgiving.:D Not to worry..being area manager for Honey-Baked hams..I'm sure she will bring one home to you..:p ....Hensylee...she asked me to make my corn-bread stuffing for Drew's daycare tomorrow. Took me 3 hours.:eek: Those little tykes better enjoy it.They are having a Thanksgiving lunch..Son-in-law will go..sure he will enjoy it.:D Bonnie

btw, whats the diff between mashed and smashed? I am positive I know what mashed is - it's whipped smooth potatoes.

I THINK smashed is mashed somewhat, with lots(mostly) lumps and skins?

When did this all change. I can recall that it used to be shameful to have lumps in your mashed potatoes or in your gravy. It showed you didn't have a clue how to cook. Even the already prepared mashed ones you buy have lumps. :D
 
Appetizers: crabmeat muffins, spinach dip w/sourdough bread, shrimp cocktail.

Main meal; Cajun fried turkey breast, corn bread stuffing, sweet potatoe casserole with marshmallows, mashed potatoes (no lumps) :D, green bean casserole, creamed corn pudding, cauliflower, cranberry (the jellied kind), Hawaiian sweet rolls.

Dessert: pumpkin pie, apple struedel, strawberry jello cream pie, egg nog and hot chocolate.

I think that is about it. I will NOT be posting pictures of me for about 3 months afterwards. :D ;)

Me, I will be tied up working my part time job at the hotel and then I don't know what I am doing...all I know is that after having to get up at 5am and work until 3pm, I won't be in any shape to drive the 4 hours to my parents house, and my brother's are both going someplace so I think I will just pick up something and treat it like it's just another day...Harrybaby:D :D :D :D :D
 
Granbonny, I will be coming your way!! I will be just "down the hill" in Gainesville. We are celebrating on saturday. My sister works at the big hospital in Gainesville and has to work on thursday. She is having everyone over on saturday instead.My niece does work in Helen but not sure where and what she does. Think it is in the offices of city of Helen.I do want good weather though!! So put in a good work with the man upstairs. I will be leaving weather of 75-80 degrees here in arizona. So you are saying that i might want to bring a sweater?

This year both my daughters are in town so my family and I will be giving thanks at our house with both kids and grandkids. We just had a new grandbaby 2 months ago and what a wonderful addition he is. I feel so grateful that everyone is happy and healthy and is able to share the Thanksgiving blessing with my husband and I. I wouldn't want it any other way. That is what life is all about.
Life is great when we are able to celebrate wonderful blessings in this great land of ours, and most of all that we have freedom. Remember freedom doesn't come free. Someone paid the ultimate price for all of us to enjoy Thanksgiving in peace. Please remember our soldiers who are so far away from home. Say a prayer for all of them and their families.

Yes...HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone!

As for us ... well, it just isn't the same anymore. We used to go to my grandparents' house (Mom's parents, that is) the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to cook ... and watch whatever TV special was on ... then we'd go home ... sleep ... and head right back to my grandparents' home for Thanksgiving Day ... where we'd eat, sleep, play games, etc.

Since Gram and Gramps moved to the assisted living facility in 2001, we simply either took a meal out to them ... or ordered from Boston Market ... or took them out to a restaurant Thanksgiving Day.

Now, with Gram gone (she died in October 2002 ... seems so long ago ... yet just like yesterday), we just take food out to eat with Gramps. Though, this year, it'll be slightly different. With my sis now married, she wants to return to the "Wednesday cooking" tradition ... so, we'll be going to their house Wednesday night to bake pies, pecan rolls, etc. Mom is going to cook a turkey here ... then we're going to order some side dishes from a restaurant ... and take the feast out with us to eat with Gramps Thursday for lunch.

Should be fun, no doubt. Still....well, it just isn't the same.....

Since we bought my husband's old home place everybody comes here for Thanksgiving. At last count today there will be 45. The "Smith's" seem to come out of the wood work when there's food. We have the normal things, turkey, ham, brisket, dressing, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy, salads, pumpkin, pecan and choclate pies, cakes, sweet potatoes, rolls, green bean casserole, cranberry dishes. Thank goodness everybody brings food. I usually fix the turkey but this year Eddie's uncle wanted to smoke it so he's doing that and bringing a cranberry dressing. I fixing the brisket because a lot of our family doesn't like turkey. Of course it's easier for me to make the potatoes and the regular dressing, rolls, tea and etc. I am going to try out a new pumpkin cheesecake receipe.

I've already started my cleaning, polishing, and washing the main windows. I'm still down in my back so I'm moving rather slowly. I thought if I started today and just touch up on Wednesday it wouldn't be too hard on me.

I go back to the chiropractor tomorrow. I sincerely wonder if he's doing me any good. I guess it just takes time to heal. (whatever I did!) He did suggest when I sit down, to alternate between putting cold and hot on the area where I hurt so bad. That seems to help a little.

I hope everyone has a great "Thanksgiving" and may your blessings be many.
 
Eleven for dinner at 2 PM
appetizers: shrimp, cheese/crackers, spinach dip and veggies
main meal: 22 lb turkey, cornbread stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, apple/cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, refrigerator mashed potatoes (sinful with sour cream, butter and sour cream, but great because you can prepare them ahead of time), asparagus, sweet and sour red cabbage
dessert: apple pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie and cheese cake- all made by daughter- what a help!
Also bought a turkey breast to make on Friday or Saturday as all will be staying through the weekend along with other guests dropping in and I just know the turkey won't last that long for sandwiches.
P.S. asked my granddaughters what they wanted to eat and they requested peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.:rolleyes: hopefully their taste will improve with age!

I believe Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Growing up, I hated it; but as I've aged, I've learned to rejoice in the sweet blessings of the day.

I'm fortunate, I don't have to do a darn thing this year for Thanksgiving. We're going home to Southern Illinois where we'll stay at my sister's lodge. The entire place will be occupied by our families and dinner is being prepared by my sister and her husband. They both deserve medals!

There will be a new addition to our group. My dear niece Madeline will celebrate her first Thanksgiving, and we will give thanks that she has survived her precarious first ten months of life.

We used to go to my mother's sister's for Thanksgiving, and her family would go to my mother's for Christmas. I always loved it! My aunt and uncle were really wondeful to me, and the family seemed to all have a good time. Around 10 or 15 years ago Mum and her sis had a feud of some sort, and that was the end of a wonderful tradition.:( Then Mum took up hosting both holidays. I think it was one thanksgiving after my father had retired, he volunteered to get the turkey. They were expecting a good crowd, and I think my mother told him to get a twenty something pounder. He ordered it from a local farm. He came back with what he claimed was a turkey. It was FORTY Lbs! I thought it was an ostrich, or at least a swan! His sister came down, and she butchered it so they could get it in the oven!:D Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Brian
 
HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!!!


A few things to consider:

- First, turkey deep fryer's are a novelty best left to those who wish to weed themselves out of the human gene pool, trust me on this!


- The best way to shoot a deer (or any form of wildlife that is not in direct threat to you our your loved ones) is with a camera, but if you must use a gun, PLEASE be sure that your target has FOUR legs and not two. We've already had a few bloomin' idiots shooting at each other instead of Bambie...

- Our new house is very nice, very cozy and we can seat six comfortably at our dining table with a few out into the wooded creek in the backyard, maybe snow falling as we enjoy the company of family. However, we have no stove, no microwave... We may very well order up one of those "complete meals" from the local grocery store for TG day....

That or pizza!


Drive safely, plan ahead for a slow drive and suprize your relatives when you show up early. No need to rush, you're on vacation!

Easy on the alcohol, you gotta save room for the pies!

Let the kids break the wishbone. Ask an area butcher if he/she can give you extra wishbones if you have more than one pair of "ruffians" that might want the honors... Oh, and they break better when dry of course.

And cause I'm a firefighter, be thankful for all those folks out there that give their time, often at the sacrifice of their own family occassions, to protect and serve their communities.

Holidays are a time when many of these people are "off-duty" and if I'm going to be in town, I'm intending to make every call that might come up that night because I know we'll be shorthanded....


Could someone please pass the stuffing? :D

I wish you all

lived closer, as I would be stopping by at every one of your houses on Thanksgiving. The feasts sound delectable!!

Wayne and I will not be traveling to Iowa this year as is our usual because of our respective job situations and having to work the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. We are going out to the community Thanksgiving dinner OR I am going to make a culinary attempt to prepare the meal myself. :)

God really did a good thing when he made us with mouths, taste buds and food - glorious food - one of the best things in this life.

Happy Thanksgiving

I hope each and everyone here has a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving. You guys are the best. We gather at my Mothers home around 3 or 4. There will only be 12 of us this year as my husband and son are in El Paso Texas, they work on an oil rig. Our spread incluldes my moms trukey and dressing, giblet gravy, whole cranberry sauce, and a yummy punch bowl cake, my contribution to the meal is brown sugar asparagus, sweet potatoe balls, potatoe cassorole surprise, peanut butter cake, blueberry delight, corn on the cob, and butter rolls, my sister in law rounds it off with green beans and a several dishes we know nothing about until she arrives. I love cooking for Thanksgiving, my daughter in law and I stay up the night before chopping, mixxing, baking and laughing. At the dinner table we talk about everything, the old days, and those who are no longer with us. It's a wonderful time I would not trade for the world.
