Hi all,
It?s hard to believe but it?s been 24 years since my first mitral valve replacement. I must admit I was a bit reactive to the information that my surgery would be performed on Halloween (read trick or treat). Obviously, I was hoping for the treat.
Since my surgeon was so confident that he could repair my mitral valve, we did not discuss the types of valves available. Once he got in, he found the valve so damaged it could not be repaired. In fact, the surgeon said later he was not sure how I was functioning with such a bad valve. I guess I had just altered my activity level to match my illness progression.
In any case, he replaced my valve with the infamous Bjork-Shiley valve which ended up being recalled. He chose the mechanical valve because of my age (28) as he wanted it to be my last OHS. Good thought but one that would not be accurate.
So here I am 24 years later, with 3 OHS behind me and finally a St. Jude valve that works perfectly. 24 years of coumadin, 24 years of ticking and 24 years I would not have had were it not for OHS. I only wish I had had VR.com back then to help me through.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and post and perhaps make a difference in other?s lives.
Keep smiling,
Gina

I was thinking about a trip to Transylvania or something as fascinating. Or how about a VR.com reunion cruise over Halloween in 2005? In any case, it will be something memorable.
Smiles, :)

You can always come see me! That would thrill you so much that you'd want to live another 2000 years. :D

I don't know Ross. My heart has survived 24 years with its valve jobs. I am not sure I want to test it with too much excitement.
However, I will be traveling around this area early next year to show my cats. I think there are cat shows up your way so who knows?
Smiles,
Gina

Congratulations!!

I listen to your success sory and feel so much better about my upcoming surgery, still no clue as to what time frame, but congratulations to your success!

Gina, congrats on your 24th Halloween. I must say, that's a heck of a way to try and dress up like Frankenstein with all his scars. I came home from the hospital from my valve surgery 13 years ago today. Grandma had my kids all dressed up but told them not to scare Mama to much.

I can't imagine 24 years of alternative heart valves. I only hope I get to see it myself.

You've certainly taken full value of the valves for those 24 years, Gina. Congratulations, and let's hope for another 24 years+ on this particular St. Jude's valve!

Best wishes,

Thanks all. I find it almost impossible to believe it has been so long. I am happy for any odds I may have beaten and intend to be around for another 50 years or so.
Smiles,
Gina
