There were two races to pick from and I usually go for the harder. I think I need a brain replacement to go with the valve replacement.
My orginal plan was to run the 5K and try for a faster pace. I somehow always manage to change my mind and go for the longer distance, which I did today. My primary goal was to finish without walking and except for the water stops I managed to complete that goal. I thought I might be able to do somewhere about 2:20 and at the turnaround I was right on target. BUT....it didn't happen. According to my garmin I ended up 2:29:49 and with runner card 2:30:02. I must say I was happy with my time. My first 7 miles were very consistent with times between 10:37 and 10:50, after that they just got slower with my slowest at 13:08. After the first two miles my HR settled in and stayed in the mid 140s which is 80% Max for me.
The weather was a little warmer than predicted, but I'm okay with that. I think at start time (9:00AM) it was about 65. There was absolutely no air movement which was unexpected since we've had bad winds here most of the week. In 28 years of running, I have never ran a race or even a training run on a course so flat. I think the elevation variance was 5 Ft and that was right before the 5 mile marker. The down side of the course for me was it is hard packed road with lots of loose gravel. I like blacktop!!!
All in all, I'm happy with my run.
Next Thursday will be my 6 month post surgery date and I couldn't ask for anything more.
