Question -- I am experiencing a huge loss of hair. Has anyone had this problem after OHS? I am three months post op and it seems like it has gotten worse in the last month. My hairdresser definately said it was thinner.. I have gotten many opinions about the cause from my PA, a pharamist, and my mom who is a nurse ( stress from surgery, coumadin, other meds, or maybe thyroid) . I have always had very thick hair. I am getting married in September so I am hoping this isn't something that is long term. I feel soo frustated..

My husband had multiple thoracic surgeries including 3 heart valve surgeries, 2 lung surgeries and some other very stressful medical problems. After every one of those, his hair became thinner for a few months. As healing and recovery took place, so did his hair growth. I'm just guessing when I say that it is probably pretty normal for the body to devote all of its energies to the recovery from a major assault to its core, and things like hair are secondary to the core recovery. Give it some time, and it should correct itself.

I hear you; you have my empathy! I had a lot of hair loss post-op. I never lost so much hair before and was definitely worried. Don't know what all might have contributed to it. It did eventually all grow back in thick but it took some time. I don't think I've read anything from anyone here about permanent hair loss. So hang in there :)

BTW, I don't know if it was a fluke or not but my hair now has a bit of curl to it whereas before it was much straighter.

I also had some hair loss. I had long hair before surgery, and after it became limp and dry....very dry. I went and got a haircut, but it stayed very dry. My surgery was July and I am just now beginning to notice some shine and bounce back in my locks!

It's the stress and trauma of surgery. I think just about all of us lost hair to a degree. It does grow back, and for some of us, too fast and long.

Thanks for all great info. Every time I wash my hair I am so worried. I just hope it subsides soon --atleast before my wedding in three months
