Just had my INR tested and it was 3.1, which my surgeons offce seemed happy with.....but since it went over the 3. mark I have noticed everytime I brush my teeth the gums are bleeding. It appears to be in the same area of my mouth, and it doesn't last long but I am concerned as I have NEVER had gums to bleed.

That along with the fact that I am never going to get use to the "ticking" makes me wish I had insisted on a tissue valve. I had several years to consider and read up on everything I could about both types and decided long before surgery that a mechanical valve was the way I should go and my surgeon agreed. Now, I am second guessing my choice. It's been over 2 months and my valve has gotten no quieter and I haven't got any more USE to it.

Sorry, not having a good morning and everything is bothering me!

Have you checked with your dentist, since you say the same area of the gums are bleeding?

I had some bleeding BEFORE my surgery. The only bleeding I've had since then is when I rather vigorously brush or at the base of a crown. I haven't had any dental work done in about 20-25 years, other than regular dentals.

Mileena, if your INR was 3.1 another back to back test could have had a reading of 2.9 and you would not see a difference at all in your gums. The INR of 3.1 is just perfect, and maybe a call to your dentist is in order....Otherwise, it sounds like you are tired and fed up, and that is very normal for only 2 months out of surgery. Give yourself some time, take up a fun hobby, and be glad that we have these valves to keep us alive.
:) :)

I agree with bina. Sounds like you are tired and fed up. I can certainly relate to being fed up. I am almost 4 months out. I am so sick of doctors right now. And could certainly use a break from it all. Call your dentist and see what they say. And then try to take some me time maybe that will help. I try to keep a positive attitude and it seems to help. I have had a couple of down days but I try to turn it around by thinking hey where would I be had I not had the surgery. And when I hear the valve ticking I tell myself hey atleast I know it is working. Before surgery I probably would have allowed myself to think of the not so good things in life but after surgery I learned not to sweat things and I have to say that it made a world of difference in how much stress I have. Not to mention except for the odd down day that I have my mood has been more balanced. If you look at the good things those other things may seem trivial after a while. Everyone is different and u will find a way to cope that works for you. This is just the way that I cope.

You may well have the beginning of periodontal disease and the Coumadin is simply unmasking the problem, which if it is, it's actually a blessing because it can be treated before it too, becomes a major problem.

Mileena,

Trust us, the heart beats will get better with time! As for the gum bleeding in the same area, you may be having 'pockets' in that area. Try to floss that area very well and use the soft brush until you see your dentist.

Hang in there...all will get better with time.

Hi Mileena

I did not know anything about the ticking until I woke up after the operation. the Surgeon found it very funny because of my line of work (bomb technician). Now I am well used to hearing it and it can be very reassuring. It took about 6 months for me to get used to it. Look after the teeth develop a relationship with a dentist. When I give my teeth a good flossing they bleed for a short while.

Take care and give time time.

Regards

Do you use Dental Floss on your teeth daily (or at least regularly)?

If not, your gums may be irritated and begging for better care.

Thanks for all the replies. You guys always come through when I am in one of these funks that seem to becoming more and more frequent.

I'm feeling better tonight.

Regarding the ticking - I did give my surgeon pause when he asked what I do. I'm a musician. Luckily, I'm mainly a composer and an infrequent performer. I'm skinny so I have a very clear ticking that nearly everyone around me has commented on. I hope that it does lessen a bit over time...it only bothers me a little at night. However, I've found that I am constantly paying attention to it. It's steady as a rock the last two weeks, which might the first two week period in my entire life. Eerie.

Use it as a metronome.
