How does everyone manage the need to take in a lot of greens and vitamin K for their heart health versus keeping their vitamin K down so to keep your INR within a proper range? I'm hardcore vegan in the core of my heart health is to eat green 6 times a day per a doctor esselstyn. I haven't had the surgery yet but I anticipate I'm going to have to get a mechanical valve and I can't imagine try to restrict amount of greens I eat. I'm not super consistent about when I take my green. Typically shortly after I get off then maybe about an hour or two later same thing with bedtime but not super consistent
 
You don't keep your vitamin K down, that's an outdated myth.

Keep vitamin K constant and just dose the diet, no need to overthink this whatsoever
 
This is a legitimate question. While its true the goal is to keep your greens consistent (not keep them down) there is and should be a concern about how many greens you are eating. Most people sont understand this problem because almost no one besides and handful of people are eating 6 servings of greens a day. First of all...good for you on your green consumption. I too eat a lot of greens when i got my mechanical valve i was on a crazy high dose of wafarin to offset the green consumption...20mg a day. To keep my blood in range, that is the amount of meds i had to consume. I had all sorts of bleeding problems. It was a nightmare. After 2 years of experimenting and a hysterectomy and another surgery to fix a bleed, i finally reached homeostasis.i no longer eat super duper rich vit K greens. No swiss chard, no more Kale. They mess with my blood too much. I still eat spinach (much lower in vit k than kale). I eat a huge salad everday. I still eat broccoli and pretty much all other veetables. I know alot about which veggies are high in vit K and which are not. There are a lot of veggies that are low in vit K, like cabbages. I dont eat green smoothies cause i cannot commit to having one every single day. I have finally found balance with wRfarin and greens.
One of the big problems with consuming a lot of greens is there are times its hard to eat the same amount of greens because you dont have access to them while traveling etc. You will figure it out! Best wishes to you!

Such as roughly the same amount, same time of day, same number of times a day ?

Don’t overthink it. Eat greens when you want. Test weekly. Adjust your dose if needed. 30 plus years on warfarin. I’ve never tracked my food. I’ve never thought, “I can’t have this because of warfarin.” The only food that ever had a meaningful impact was way too much cranberry juice. Sent it way up. But I was having a glass or two a day. Don’t know why. I just found it really tasty. So I adjusted my dose, got back in range, and I’ll still have the occasional glass. Just not the occasional half gallon. 😁

Cranberry Juice is one of those things that are contraindicated for people who take warfarin. According to what I've seen, stay clear of Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice.

I don't eat a lot of greens (but should), and I take K2 daily. It's not getting me my K1 - but I'll try to do better with the green stuff that I have no affection for. The K2 has not had any effect on my INR.
 
I think the safe thing is anything that adds a lot of Vit. K. There are some good articles out there that give you the guidance. There are some things you don't realize have a high amount a Vit. K.
 
I'm hearing a whole host of other things you've got to be careful about excuse my ignorance I haven't had valve surgery yet I'm not action Warfarin I'm just prepping for the future. I've heard it's better to just get an electric shaver that you shouldn't be using an old school handheld shaver anywhere on your body you got to be careful about Cuts obviously whipping your nails anything that could draw blood. I understand you've got to be really consistent about what you eat when you eat it how much you eat it I guess any kind of supplements I would think something like magnesium powder vitamin B12 I don't know that wouldn't matter I've been taking vitamin K2 probably not a good idea I take things like enzyme Co q-10 I'm assuming that's cool I eat a lot of being a ginger ate a lot of vegan stuff cuz I'm vegan I ate a very heart healthy diet... I ate a ton of vegetables fruits and Grains and not at the most regular hour. What else? I take aspirin and ibuprofen cuz I've got arthritis I've heard that's a No-No that would be Madness for me because Vicodin is a lot of side effects Tylenol absolutely doesn't help me with any of my pains. That would freak me out if I couldn't take aspirin or ibuprofen. I take ginkgo biloba because I've got hearing loss I would think that's got to be out because that's a blood thinner.

Keith I'm not relying on the group for all the information. I'm doing a lot of Internet research but I'm a hardcore vegan that's how I save myself from having a heart attack. Dr. Esselstyn. I do understand there's some other alternate vegetables

cranberries are out? I do take cranberries for urinary health

Have you been reading anything any of long time users of warfarin have said at all? I mean this whole post is the warfarin myth hall of fame summed up.

If I shared your concerns, I would opt for a tissue valve when the time came. It would be the best choice that would allow me to sleep at night.

I’ve been shaving with a regular blade for 30 years on warfarin. Electric irritates my skin. I really don’t know where you’re getting this stuff.

I have a question along this line. I love a lot of vitamin k foods. However I am not very consistent. Would it make sense to take a vitamin k pill at the end of a day when I didn’t eat any vitamin k foods?

Hi, yes it makes a lot of sense

if you keep a baseline amount of K1 on a daily basis it will negate any big rises & falls

I agree. Much of this is about risks. I tried the electric shaving for over 28 months and I found it was irritating and I could still draw blood. Then I would rotate, 2 weeks electric then 2 weeks razor. Finally I said screw it and went back to full time razor and yes I get an occasional cut with blood. My understanding it is not about the bleeding, but t\rather the risk for bacteria to get in your blood stream as it could find a hike on the valve as there are parts of the vac;w that the moving blood is not strong and the bacteria can grow there. That is why they still often tell you to pre-med before dental work and a proactive measure. That said I draw blood more often from flossing and such than shaving and the mouth is a sewer for bacteria. That is why I always mouth wash. Life is full of risks and unless you live in a bubble it is about what you feel comfortable with and mitigating as much as you want.

Rate response. How much do you know you're risking when you are getting a cut? I'm pretty maniacal about shaving myself I draw blood off and also I'm a complete free I tend to shave all the hair off a lot of my body cuz I'm a former triathlete that is think I look hot when I'm more hairless... I'm always shaving unwanted hair off everywhere my eyebrows my ears like I said all over my body. What's risky blood draw and what's not risky? How do you assess that.? I know about the flossing from blood and that's actually risky in your mouth because that can make its way into your heart. I try to floss enough so that doesn't happen. You said there's some sort of pre-med you do before dental work can you tell me more about that? Yeah I'm concerned about having a you know regimen my eating not eating certain foods not doing things like Ginkgo for cranberry that are good for my health. I mean what if you even draw blood cutting your toenails? What if you draw blood cutting your foot on a rock in the ocean? I volunteer to work with cats and draw blood all the time from them even though the cats have shots they're in a building with dozens of other cats is that a risk? Does that mean having a pet is more of a risk?

Getting a baseline meeting you're basically eating the same amount of food at the same time every day?. Sounds a bit regimented but if you have to do it to have to do it.
I'm single don't have to work and have an easy life I typically have a breakfast of a couple of kinds of fruit flaxseed water down almond milk and oatmeal in the morning throughout the day I eat these rice far as I try to Pound Town greens right when I wake up a couple of times throughout the day I have dinner around 9 just a ton of fruits vegetables and then I try to have greens before I go to bed around midnight I'm not sure how consistent that is but it's probably not as consistent if it could be
