Soul of a surgeon
By Richard Selzer, M.D.
Great article on how it feels to be a surgeon. My favorite paragraph:
For many surgeons this tension [of keeping failure inside] is too much to bear, and they withdraw from the lists. For others, it is another challenge that must be overcome, one that must be used to strengthen both resolve and character. Does this resilience give the surgeon the appearance of coldness and vanity?
I assure you, it is the appearance only. He feels the hollowness, the anguish of failing to heal, and, worse, of personally delivering a hurtful or killing blow. The true surgeon operates as much with his heart as with his hands.
