Hi everyone -

Sorry to badger the list here, one topic that precipitated from an earlier thread on K saturation was, surprisingly, my colitis. I decided since it was ancillary to the earlier thread that I'd start a new one just to see if there are any new leads is all.

Essentially, I'm curious about the experience of any Warfarin users out there who also have colitis.

Thank you!

Hi, I guess I qualify on this one. It seems I threw a little clot a few months after surgery that temporarily cut off the circulation to part of my right colon. I was very fortunate that it was only temporary but it did leave me with colitis in that area. It is fine for long spells and then flares back up. During a flare-up my INR tends to go up and then it takes a while to get back on track. I think of everything involved with it that could affect an INR.....poor appetite, changes in how rapid food is processed through the body, changes in activity due to not feeling well, changes in medications including antibiotics and sometimes steroids...that it is really easy to see how INR can get messed up. I was on Asacol for quite a while and that really helped. I'll have my St.Jude mitral valve 3 years this August and have had problems with Colitis almost 2 1/2 years. It is like anything else though. You get used to it and then it no longer seems like a big deal. I don't think of my MVR as a big deal anymore either and there was a day I really didn't envision that happening. :)

thanks there!

thanks there!

hi bvdr - thank you for your response. that was important in me thinking through my valve replacement options. I also love that quote from John 1:5 that you close your entries with.

Anything that affects absorption of the drug or vitamin K can have an effect on the INR. Colitis, vomiting, diarrhea, severe constipation, gastroparesis ...
