Ross,
By the time I finish paying for medical school, I will have paid over $300,000 for that piece of paper that has my name with an M.D. after it. I graduated from medical school 19 years ago and I am still paying, despite working for public health and receiving loan repayment monies for 4 years. Chris' PhD also cost a chunk of change, but he was able to defray some tuition as a teaching assistant, which is just not possible in medical school. Like so many of my friends with PhD's, Chris is out of work. Such a waste of talent!
Sometimes I think it would have been better to go into nursing. Some of my friends are pulling in up to $79/hr when you figure in bonuses and holiday and overtime pay. Of course, these are the nurse specialists, the ones with extra training in the ER or ICU. But still...
I drive a 2000 Chevy Cavalier with 130,000+ miles on it, and it is our newest vehicle. Our furniture is early auction specials, and our house is 88 years old.
Still, we have a good life, and I don't mean to complain. It's just the idea that I can't get that albatross of medical school debt off of my shoulders...
Still nice in Idaho,
-Laura
