My computer geek nephew, Ryan, announced his engagement last Saturday night at a family get-together.
He's been going with his girlfriend for 3-4 years. They'll get their Piled Higher 'n' deeper degrees in computer sci (I think May 2010), then plan to marry that October. Ryan will be 1 or 2 weeks shy of 25 when he graduates.
His girlfriend has a lot of penpals throughout the world and collects postcards. So Ryan did a postcard on the computer with a photo of him proposing at her favorite tree in her favorite park, put "Deana, will you marry me?" underneath. Took it to the post office where she has a box, asked them to hand-cancel it and put it in the box. Then that afternoon, took her to pick up her mail. When she read the postcard, he took her to the tree and got down on one knee, proposed and whipped out the ring he had bought.

Of course, I was out of town Saturday night -- cat show, natch. But Ryan called me with the news.

I've e-mailed the bride-to-be and offered to give her a luncheon (for bridesmaids and women in the family) the day of the rehearsal. I gave each of my two nieces one. Gotta start saving now!

Congrats to you. I hope she lets you give the meal, and keep the tradition alive. :D

Congratulations, Marsha!:)

I know they will be very happy!:):)

Congrats! I wish mine would stop creating babies and get married.

I imagine it'll be several years after their wedding before my nephew starts a family, what with all the expense and time of getting Ph.D.'s.
He'll just be 25 and I think his girlfriend is maybe one year older.
They still have some time. My older niece -- Ryan's cousin -- got married 1 month after turning 30, had her twins 5 years after that.

Oh I completely understand that concept. I tried to instill that into my boys, but seems only one may actually use that concept. The other two, well, they be renegades.
