I am getting ready to leave on 6/16 for a 3+ week Caribbean trip (my wedding). So far I haven't had one drink of any kind, but once I get to the tropical paradise I know I will want to have a drink or two (max) a day (maybe not on all days, but many). What is the best way to monitor this? I will have my home tester - how often should I check to see if their are any effects? Should I have an alcoholic drink now to see what if any effect it has on my INR before I leave? If so, how many days before an INR test should I have my "test" drink?

Patty if anything changes, it will be because of being away from home and eating different foods. Alcohol doesn't really affect INR at all that any of us can see. You should go, have fun, think of me a lot, do what you want and indulge also. Test as you normally would. Are you doing weekly or what now? :)

Run it by your doc. You'll feel more relaxed and able to have a great time on your trip if you know your drink limits. If I have cocktails, I just ask for a half a shot of the booze per cocktail, so, if I can have two shots total of hard stuff, then I can make it into 4 drinks! Also you can get most drinks in a non-alcoholic version, so you can still get something pretty in a fancy glass and an umbrella sticking out! Take a pic!

Have FUUUN!:D

I agree with Ross, the bigger culprit will be just the trip itself. I still wouldn't test any more than once a week.

We'll take a little wager here - my bet is that your INR will go up. (Mine always does when traveling.)

I'm still testing 2 times a week. My INRatio machine did not come yet - scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I go to the lab at the dr's office tomorrow for my next test. We will see what it is.

I'm curious - what reason would the INR have going up with travel? (still trying to learn as you can see) I would think the foods you might be eating might make it go down (vit K foods)?

Oh & LB - I like your idea about the weak drinks - my fav Caribbean drink is the "Bushwacker" and they go down pretty fast as they taste like a chocolate shake!

Different areas have different cuisine and different nutrional values also. Some things get more juice from the soil and some don't. Plus you tend to relax on vacation and not rush and excercise a lot.
