Howdy, Y'all.
I am glad that I found this web site. It is very informative.
I am a 63 year old woman and was diagnosed with a heart murmur about 3 years ago. Push has come to shove and I am going through tests to see if my mitral valve will be repaired or replaced. My question is about a mechanical mitral valve that my neighbor has in his chest. He told me that it is a GUIDANT C&VS CAB6/ MVR. AND he doesn't have to take blood thinners. With all of the discussion about mechanical valves that I have read here, I am really puzzled about that. I wrote to Guidant but have not received a reply. Does anyone know anything about this Guidant valve?

Thanks in advance,
Liz

Hey Liz,
Welcome to this Great Family :D You are joining a unique group of people from all over the world. You will learn a lot here.
I looked at the Guidant website and from what I have read, they do not do heart valves. Here is the link, http://www.guidant.com/patient/ It would be nice if they did have one that didn't require a person to take coumadin.
There is a lot to read and if you have any questions just ask away.
Have a Great Holiday and again Welcome.
Take Care

Hi there Liz, although I can't answer your question, I thought I'd say hello. I'm a fourty year-old Brazilian who has already had three mitral valve replacements as a result of rheumatic fever, but all with tissue valves. I'll be having my fourth within a couple of years, and despite all the risks involved in reoperations, I've decided to go tissue again unless the surgeon thinks otherwise once he's got in there. I hope you enjoy being part of this site. Take care,
Débora

welcome to VR - I missed your post - sorry for a delay in getting to say hello. OUr member have all been celebrating the fourth. There has been a recent involved discussion on valves - maybe you saw it. The gang will be checking in soon.

I was age 62..when I had my surgery...Mine was due to their finding a 5.0 aneurysm.... Just lucky..No symptoms that I had it... Been doing great..now..3 years and 4 months later..Just have to remember to take my coumadin once a day. :p ...No problems from it..I hometest..which is great.....Take care..and let us hear from you again...Bonnie

Guidant makes defibrilators and products used by Cardiologists and Surgeons during invasive procedures. I was NOT able to find any reference to Guidant valves or to the part number you provided. I searched the internet for Guidant, Guidant Valves, and GUIDANT C&VS CAB6/ MVR.

Anyone with a mechanical heart valve who is NOT taking anticoagulent medication is at HIGH RISK of forming blood clots with possible STROKE, especially in the Mitral position due to lower velocity through the valve.
