Guess this question is for all the gals out there. I am pre-suregery AVR. have talked to the nurse at length about Coumadin. When I asked her if it would affect my period, she said that it would definitely affect it and make it hard to manage. Has this been the case with anyone else? If so, is there anything that can be done to help?

She told me to talk to my gynecologist and that he might put me back on birth control. I have 3 year old twins and have had my tubes tied. Was hoping to not have to worry about taking birth control pills anymore. Thanks! :)

You most likely will have a heavier flow on coumadin and possibly longer bleeding. I had very bad periods prior to going on coumadin and, after 8 years, decided to have a hysterectomy because it got so bad. However, I had endometriosis in the uterus so my situation was probably different from yours and I am not trying to scare you but only provide some feedback.
I am still sure you will find changes happening.

If a woman starts on warfarin, will she bleed more during her periods? Usually there is not much increase in the flow. This is because the period is not bleeding in the usual sense of the word. It is the shedding of the lining of the uterus. This does not occur until a fresh lining is in place. Because it is freshly shed, there is blood in it but it is not an open wound like a cut.

Ross,
Maybe you missed the thread about this a couple of months ago. So,

Beccaslp,
Yes, the coumadin does affect your menstrual cycle. Read what Geebee says (a woman) and believe what your nurse told you.

I do have similar concerns as the others and have been looking into that ablation treatment. I wouldn't want to be taken off coumadin to have it done though and wondered if anyone else on the boards had it. My gyno doesn't think that I would need to be taken off C but wanted to confer with my cardio, which I haven't done yet (procrastination and very little time). Anyone else out there have the procedure?
