I will be getting another smooth fox terrier in a few weeks. I am excited and a bit apprehensive.
It will have been 6 mos since we lost our smooth to lymphoma. Anyone have any suggestions for a new book on raising a puppy? The one I have is 13 yrs old!
She is a split faced sweet girl, and I hope to show her a bit, since she's not bred in CA and I'd like to show her off to the California breeders!
I didn't think it would be so hard to make a decision to replace our old dog, but it was a very hard thing to do.
I'm happy just thinking about her!

Glad the pup will pick you up
THERE are THOSE days:eek2: though

My puppy Thelma will be 2 this month had her since 6 months after a 13 year old Border Collie. We got her a week after her passing needed to fill the hole . It's like having a baby again and I'd do it all over again lol. Good luck with the new baby.

Gail,
All my critters have been cats, know nothing about bringing up a pup, but I'm so happy to hear you're getting one. I bet she'll be a great little one to have around.

Good Luck with the new puppy. YOu can always watch the Dog Whisper or get one of his books. I enjoy watching him and always learn something. I haven't had a small puppy for about 5 years. I worked in resuce and usually ended up fostering or keeping the older dogs. Puppies are fun and work too. Can't help loving puppy breath! They are sooooo cute. Have fun. The new pup will steal your heart. You never stop loving the dogs that have been in your heart, but you will always find a little more room for someone new. I still have 10 left here from our past rescue work. It's a lot of work. My neighbor will have to help me when I get back from the hospital for awhile. Feeding 10 is a bit of a chore every morning. I lost my cat in 2006 to feline lymphoma. It was terrible!

I love puppies, how exciting! I used a crate to potty train my dogs. Make sure you keep your shoes and socks out of sight, those seem to be their favorite things to ruin. Underwear too. I have no idea how they find it, but they do!

I like "how to housebreak your dog in 7 days" which, while old, has very good instructions on scheduling, crate training, etc.
Also the books on clicker training are pretty decent. Karen Pryor is the author.
The key, of course, is keeping the messes controlled until pup reaches an age where s/he has control of the sphincters (10 to 12 weeks), and putting pup on a feeding/eliminating schedule, using crate training.
For manners, obedience, and conformation training, I'd say start with investigating some training centers near you, visit until you find one where you like the way they train. I'd emphasize more the clicker/positive reinforcement training over old fashioned correction based training. Cookies, cookies, cookies.

I love your fur babies! The black/white/tan is Chester.

This is Kaiser (female)

YES, use a crate. If you are fortunate to work from home, take the pup out every 1/2 hour or confine to a laundry room if you have one. You can use those puppy pads, it helped when I could not watch the pup's every move while cleaning or making dinner. Nothing like puppy breath!

Gail,

Very sorry to hear you lost a dog to Lymphoma. There is a wonderful group of researchers trying end canine cancer (my Sherman lost an eye to spindle cell sarcoma 3 years ago). Check out Wearethecure.org. They even have a 'pink paw' car magnet.

Smooth Fox Terriers, love the breed. Have you looked into Earthdog events? Although I have herding dogs and can't compete even though Odis loves to track the moles in the yard (one the rules state terriers/doxies only, two I don't think Odis could fit in a 9" tunnel without getting stuck) I've gone to some events with a friend and her Russell. No training at all to do, just put 'em on the ground and see if they hunt.

Have fun with your pup and GET A KONG TOY! They are the best babysitters for busy puppies (and adult dogs)!

Thanks all for your wonderful comments and positive support! Our pup, Fiona, will be ours on Aug 4th. We are flying into Chicago to get her. Her daddy is a top ten smooth and multiple group winner. But,the breeder goes for temperament first and foremost, so we are very excited. We did agility with our last smooth, and also CGC, plus conformation (int'l ch.). Tass, the pink car magnet sounds like a wonderful idea. Lymphoma took our girl so fast. We could only afford oral meds, and they only put her in remission for 3 mos. Not long enough!
We have a crate, and got a fresh kong and a squeaky toy. I'm reading books now, and may start clicker training as I found a trainer close to me who does puppy training classes with clicker. Also, they now have puppy socialization classes! How things have changed in 14 yrs.
Earth dog would be fun. Our last smooth caught many rodents, including a possum! We are so curious to see how this puppy compares to our first smooth. Maybe this one won't steal things like panties and bathroom garbage, I hope, I hope! But I really hope she fetches and plays ball like our first. These pups are staying with their Mom so much longer than our 1st dog, so we think this will help her personality.
