A very good friend of mine is looking at having his Aortic Valve replaced. His main concern is his age - 82 yrs. He was also questioning valve choice. I have both mechanical and bovine but I'm 42 yrs. So I was wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom that may have been through this. He is in great shape, an avid tennis player and golfer. Oh. and recovery time. I explained to him that everyone is different and it's what you put into it. Mine was a quick two and a half months.:)

I would think that bovine would be a no-brainer at his age. If he's in good shape, he should have no problem. Dick at 70 was back to golf, tennis and biking at 3 months.

Hey there Cherbam,

First off, thanks for looking out for your friend. Very, very nice to read of your caring nature.

Second, what I would have given to have a friend like you 18 months ago!!

:)

You're a heart valve guru!!!

And, I totally agree, recovery is an independent process. While some are back at work in a few weeks, others take months, even years, to fully realign their physical and mental capacity.

Personally, I had quite a dark experience with cardiac depression and Vicodin addiction that delayed my recovery. Then again, I am now surfing once again!!!

What is that cliche... Oh yah... "All good things come to those who wait."

Or something like that... :)

Take care and best of luck helping your friend.

Cheers,

Adam
