Hi and Good Day to all of you. I am new here but have been browsing for the last month. I am a car dealer in the Philippines, 34, male, and just have an AVR at the Philippine Heart Center last April 30, 2005. I must say it went well coz here i am talking to u guys. For the first 32 years if my life, i didnt know that i had any heart problem because i was very active. Not until i got endocarditis last 2003 that the problems began that eventually led to my AVR.
My concern is this. I have previously been bleeding ocassionally on my stool due to follips . (i dont know the exact term). Today on 6th or 7th day on Coumadin, ive noticed some blood on my stool again. Did someone else experience this same thing? Ive already contacted my cardiologist but is considering your experiences. Thanks in advance and GOD Bless Us All!

Welcome and congratulations on getting through surgery.

As far as the blood goes, it could be caused by many different things. Of course, bleeding due to coumadin is always a possibility. If your INR is too high, bleeding can occur in many different areas.

You are smart to contact your cardio. If you are merely dealing with a small amount of blood in your stool, you should be fine with waiting until the next business day to meet with your doctor. Of course, if you are bleeding profusely, you need to go to the emergency room right away.

Good luck.

Hi.
I would be sure to communicate with both a cardiologist and a gastroenterologist. If you have had some polyps in the past, you need to make sure both know about the situation. I wouldn't play around with polyps.

My rule is if the blood is just a spot on the toilet paper, you can wait until the doctor's regular office hours. If the water in the toilet turns red, then go to the ER.

Please get this checked as soon as possible. It is not normal at anytime to have a bloody stool. Hope you get over this soon. And welcome the best place in the whole world.

walcome, Jepski - we are sure that you will be seeing your doctor for this. Hope it can be cleared up quickly. Will you come back to tell us the results of your dr visit? Best wishes.....

Thank u for all ur responses. Its only now that I can breathe a sigh of relief. becauze there is no more blood. I took Daflon which is my regular medicine for Follyps and my cardio also lowered my dose of coumadin. I had PT_INR of 2.46. My doc puts me on 2.5mg and 1 mg coumadin alternately. Any comments on my numbers? God Bless!

Thanks for reporting back, Jepski. We always like to know results. Valve Replacement needs all the information we can get - for those, like you, who come along after you with similar questions.

Congratulations on getting things back on a normal course. I am sure your mind is at rest now. Blessins.....

Hi Jepski,

I think you would do yourself a favor by really learning about warfarin and why it is so important to you. Our member Al Lodwick has a great web site and he is our expert here on the forum. His website is warfarininfo.com.

Your INR was in range for what most doctors want for an AVR which is usually 2.0-3.0. It really doesn't matter what dosage is used as long as the dose results in an acceptable INR. Doses need to be adjusted quite often ....especially in the early stages. Anytime there is a change in your routine medication, as now with you resuming Daflon, a follow-up INR should be done to see how it is going to affect your metabolizing of warfarin.

The health of your colon can really affect your warfarin dosing. I hope all goes well for you and that we see you around here more often.

Too many "IN"s, Betty

Hi Allodwick,

First, Thnks to Betty and Ann. Ive visited the site but im really concerned about the dietician at our hospital. She said that the allowable Vit K consumption is 59 mg. I forgot to ask her what if i consume lower (20s) or higher (80s) what will happen to my INR? Would it be better to avoid Vit K all in all? My docs said that im young and active and no particular food is restricted of my diet. Could u please advise me on this? Im 34 male and weighs around 145 now but really averages 150 when healthy. God Bless!

Jepskie, my disabled brother is on coumadin. He was warned to be careful about green leafy veggies because of the vit k - so he opted out of all of them! That was wrong, but his choice. I think the general rule, as others in VR state, is that you must be consistent with the amount of green vegetables that you consume. But they will come along and let you know more.

I don't believe in counting amounts of vitamin K. People should eat what they like and have the warfarin adjusted to that. Once you get that done it is fairly simple to not make any big changes in the amount of vitamin K that you eat.
