I just got the very sad news in a Christmas card from her husband and a phone call from him, that forum member Debs, username maisiejane, died at the end of June. She was feeling very unwell, a virus (?) got on her replacement valve but that was missed as they didn’t do an echo, they just did ECG and basic stuff, said her heart was okay. She then had a stroke, admitted to hospital, moved to cardiac ward when they realised it was in fact endocarditis but she took a turn for the worse and died a few days later on 29th June :-(

Here is a screenshot of the last message she sent to the forum last April - she was only 59.

That's terribly sad to hear, Anne.
And tragic they didn't do an echo as standard practice considering her medical history.

At St Thomas' Hospital, they erred on the side of caution and immediately began tests for endocarditis when I went in with chest pain, fever, fatigue and some breathlessness. The tests included blood cultures. Turned out to be pericarditis, but the endo specialist said medics should always consider such a presentation potential endocarditis.

Thanks for letting us know and condolences to her husband and next of kin.

sorry to read that ... my thoughts go to her family and friends

Hi there

She was feeling very unwell, a virus (?) got on her replacement valve

I just wanted to add that it would be bacteria. I'd be wondering about oral hygiene and any recent dental visits previous to the fever.

a fundamental difference between a virus and a bacteria is that a virus does not live nor grow outside of a living cell, so it can not grow on a valve leaflet (or break off and cause a stroke).

A bacteria does however do exactly that, and the mouth (and plaque)
