Hi Everyone, well I had my visit with my surgeon on Thursday and we both agreed its now 'time' to start preparing for surgery. He wants to do a catherization before my valve surgery. Which is good - because if I need bypass - its good to get it done while he's in there fixing my valve.

SO I go into the hospital a couple days before my planned surgery to have a cath - he and I will review my results and discuss any potential need of a bypass - then in a couple days I come back and have the valve surgery and bypass if needed. He hopes to be able to do a repair - but won't know till he gets in there. With my heart disease history I thought he was leaning towards a mechanical and making sure there won't be a need to go back in again in the future..

Hopefully they won't find too many 'clogged' arteries. I know I have a couple of them - but last time I had a cath I think I was only around 60% clogged. Hopefully, it hasn't gotten worse.

He warned me about the possiblity of going into ventricular fibrilation after surgery - which I have never gone into - and the possibility of getting shocks from my ICD. I tend to think the a-fib or ventricular tachycardia will probably do it to me - moreso than v-fib...

Hopefully I won't get any shocks.. but like he said: I'm well protected with the ICD if I do.. It just hurts like heck when I get shocked - but hopefully all those meds will keep me from remembering just how painful the shocks are.

So, now I wait - to get a date for my cath. It should be a couple weeks at the most. But I'll find out this week.

I told him my daughter is graduating from college and I don't want to be all drugged up when I go to her graduation. He indicated - this is not a 'rush' - and I have alittle time so we can arrange the surgery somewhat around my schedule. :D

All in all he said - it shouldn't take more than a month.

He said I could possibly be running at the end of two mos - but more likely 3 mos. But definently not TWO WEEKS like I did when I had my ICD surgery.. I never did tell my EP doc about that race.. :D

So, I decided the best way to get through this and come out with half a smile - is probably to pick a 'race' in the fall - and make it my 'goal' to 'finish' it. :D

I told him I had plans to go back racing. I told him there's this guy out west who has a valve replacement and he's running marathons - so I expect I should be able to do the same. If he can do it - then so can't I.. He didn't argue with me - or tell me I couldn't - of course he'll let my EP doc do that.. Not that it does any good. But I may stick to the 5 or 10k's.. At the most maybe 'one' half marathon a year..

The first thing he said to me when he came in the room was - your having symptoms aren't you? Dr. Greenberg told me your not exercising and I knew there would only be one reason for you not to exercise - she's having symptoms - so tell her to come in.... I think he's got me pegged !!!

He also told me I was very 'different'.. from other cardiac patients. I didn't quite understand - he said - it was like - you know in math they have the equation n = ? Well, he said I'm the 'n'.. they don't have any data on people like me yet..

In the end - I felt very confident this surgeon would give me the best medical care possible. So, I feel comfortable proceeding with him.

Well, I thought I would just update you all.

This surgeon also was quite impressed with my knowledge of valves and the issues. This site and the CCF site has been so helpful - I can't thank you all enough for all your insight. I will be forever grateful to you all. :)

Best Wishes
Runner -
Marilyn and Dick

you'll be fine

you'll be fine

Hi Runner, it's nice to see how optimistic you are despite your worries. Here we come across so many people facing similar situations and each one of us deals with the problem in a different way. Some show more confidence than others and as for myself, well, after having been through valve replacements three times already, the next time I might just be able to wake up in the middle of the procedure and give the surgeon a hand in case he has problems, just kidding, of course! So far I haven't really been feeling anything out of the ordinary and although the valve I have now has started to go, my cardio told me that it's still working OK and there's no sign of leakage. Even he doesn't know how long it will be until I have to go for my fourth surgery but one thing's for sure. I'm not as anxious as I was a few weeks ago and I owe that to all the friends I've made here. Every time I have doubts I know I can rely on all of you and that's priceless. See you around

Please make sure you post or have someone else post after your surgery, so we can know how things are going. We worry.

Sometimes people decide they're done with the surgery and thus done with the site. That's fine, but please let us know what happened. It's kind of ominous when people just drop off the face of the earth.

Bet you'll soon be posting with Mark Wagner about your racing miles. More power to you both!

Marilyn you will be in my prayers. I meet with my cardio and surgeon in a couple of weeks to schedule my surgery so I'm right behind you. It sounds like you are very active and in very good shape (I so wish I was!) so I'm sure you'll make it to the other side of the mountain just fine. I will forward to someone posting for you.

Thank You

Thank You

Thanks for all your well wishes - and I promise to have someone post for me - giving you the thumbs up that all went well after the surgery. If I can't get my daughter - I'll ask my surgeon or my EP doc. I'm sure they do it for me.. Plus, there's a catherization lab lady that I'm friends with and I'm sure she would do it for me. Her name is Heidi - she's really nice and schedules all my caths. :)

I got a call yesterday from my Catherization Lab and I'm scheduled for my cath this Thursday - I expect surgery will be next week - unless I want to hold off till after my daughters graduation - which the surgeon said I could - but my husband is most anxious to get this over. So, I'll probably have it done next week if they offer it.

Tom, if it wasn't for 'goals' I don't think I would have ever gotten through this long cardiac journey - its what keeps me focused on the important things in life - like having FUN and my goals are always FUN... My goal is to do a 5 mile run on Ogunquit Beach in Maine - I did it the last couple years and its FLAT and BEAUTIFUL and they give a lobster medal to all who finish... Plus, they give you a small lobster roll at the finish line.. :) Thta's my GOAL.. It usually is around the middle of September.. I hope I can do - I'm going to have to work really hard to make it possible. That would be almost 4 mos since my surgery - I think it should be possible. The surgeon indicated I could be jogging in 2 or possibly 3 mos. So, I think that's alittle soon - but at least he has a positive attitude. I like that...

Deborah - you have such courage - I admire you. I bet you could do the next surgery yourself. You are a trooper.. I hope I have half as much courage as you days before my surgery. :)

Glenda - I want to wish you well on your surgery - I'm sure we'll both be fine. Don't worry about the exercise - we'll get to that 'after' our surgery - just try to keep us down - we can coach each other to the finish line.

Nancy, once again thank you - you are a saint to post to everyone and with such knowledge and comforting words - you always say the right thing. I do feel I'm in good hands and I feel confident that the surgeon will give me 100% and that's all I can ask for... The rest is up to me.

Thank You Everyone - I expect to stay on this board long after my surgery - I have made some wonderful internet friends and I'm sure going to try and keep up with Mark and Tom if its possible. It will be FUN to share 'race' stories to.

Happy Trails To All
Runner - Marilyn and Dick and ??? I have got to give my new valve a 'name' -perhaps a ladies name - so Dick can have someone to care for.. and behave like a gentleman.. My surgeons name is Anthony Discipio - I could call her Lady "Di" short for Discipio.. My surgeon is a bike racer and a ski racer.. He's quite an active guy..

NO WAY - NO SEX - It can't be true !!!

NO WAY - NO SEX - It can't be true !!!

Ross, what do you mean NO SEX - they didn't tell me THAT.. NO I THOUGHT HE SAID A COUPLE WEEKS AT THE MOST..

I WAS TOLD ITS ALL IN HOW YOU 'POSITION' YOURSELF - ROSS.. :D

I HAVE MANY POSITIONS.. :D AND I'M SURE TO FIND THE 'RIGHT' ONE.. AND WHEN I DO - THERE WILL BE LOTS OF :D :D :D :D :D :D

Marilyn,
Best wishes for you! Your post surgery goals are what will get you up and out much faster, making for a great recovery. (Also, the inclusion of lots of :D :D :D :D :D :D certainly doesn't hurt either!)

All the best Marilyn. I'll be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way.

Cheers
Anna : )

My prayers and thoughts are with you Marilyn. You sound like your in really good hands. Just think, the sooner you get this out of the way, the sooner you can start pounding the pavement and training for that FULL marathon! ;) God bless you. You will get through this with flying colors!

Mark

Marilyn, I'll have to amplify a comment by your doctor -- "You're different. . . "

Of course you are -- you are here at vr.com, and your whole extended family is pulling for you. You're also an inspiration to the rest of us who are farther back in the waiting line but still actively training to stay as healthy as we can to make it easier later.

Our prayers continue to be with you.
