And now that I have your attention.

I'm just looking for some practical advice that any parents or grandparents may have on flying with an infant. My son, his girlfriend and our new grandbaby will be spending Christmas with us and they'll most likely fly here. It's only an 1.5 hour flight. But I was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice. The baby will be approximately 2 mo. old by then.

Hi Karlynn,

We have been taking ours along on plane trips......first one was @ 6 weeks. Buying the extra seat is well worth it. Also the safe way to go. Infant car seat straps right in. If you can't swing the extra seat..... I recommend the front carriers. Make sure the baby likes this before taking the trip. Our little one never liked facing in towards the chest. Just outwards. So that did not work for us. Have a bottle available for take off and landing. It is almost a guarentee that the change in cabin pressure will bother the ears. We found this to be an issue for a number of years. Toddler time. One of those nice no spill sipper cups. Can't beleive I remember all of this stuff:eek:

Did I miss something Karlynn? Has the baby been born? If so....congratulations Grandma!

Thanks so much for the very helpful hints. She's due to arrive any time in the next 3 weeks. Lauren (mommy) is a pretty petite youn woman and the doctor says the baby has no where to go anymore but out. So we'll see!!!!!

For all the passengers?:D
exactly!:D

Seriously though, we travel out of the country every year. My oldest had been on 11 different flights before he was two. The best suggestion I can give you is have your DIL time the breastfeeding with the take off and landing. Crying is the childs way of equalizing the pressure in their ears and the sucking will help to alleviate the discomfort. If she is bottle feeding I don't have any suggestions, unfotunately the bottles don't require the same effort and don't have that same comfort feel for the baby.

My niece was a bit older, 8 mos. when we all went to Aruba. We noticed morning flights seemed to be easier on her. The most important and helpful was having that bottle ready before takeoff and landing. And as for any dirty faces we encountered the little that she did cry, I just turned to those people and said Keep the looks to yourself, cause one day she will be running this country, as well as all the cranky babies on flights of this generation. I'm sure you guys will do fine. Good Luck! Congrats on the new baby arriving soon...So, I guess soon we'll see a pic of baby outside the womb?

Try to time the flight for a time of day the baby isn't normally cranky. I flew a lot with both my youngest and oldest as infants and I think it is much easier than when they are a little bit older. I also find other travelers are more understanding when a young baby cries on a flight than an older one. Everyone who has had a baby remembers the "newborn cry" Also, even if it is difficult it is only 1 1/2 hours...

I have ear pain going up/coming down and have heard small ones crying throughout the plane. That breaks my heart. Find out if there is something to help with that.

Hi! I traveled alot with my boys when they were babies, and I agree with getting the baby her own seat if possible. Yes, have a bottle or allow the baby to nurse to alleviate ear pressure. Of all the trips I made when the boys were small babies, I can't think of any horrendous trips that stand out in my mind! Most all of the time they fell asleep once the engines started, many times even before the plane was off the ground! I'd fly with a baby over a toddler any day!!! Wishing you all the best of luck on the upcoming arrival! Also let your son and girlfriend know that they can keep their stroller all the way to the gate. Just ask the gate worker to "gate check" the stroller and it will be waiting at the gate for them at their destination as soon as they get off the plane.
One other thing, keep the diaper bag to a minimum. It just gets in the way! My first trip with my first son, I had the super mama-jama diaper bag thing going on -- I had a mini-clinic packed in there, things like tylenol, 3 days worth of diapers (what if my luggage got lost! ) extra outfits, rattles, pacifiers, thermometer etc...... it was just another thing for mama pack mule to haul around & try to keep track of! I now pack a couple diapers, tarvel size bottle of hand sanitizer, travel pak of wipes, 1 piece pj's in case I need to change clothes. Also those little plastic sleeve bags your newspapers come in are real handy to store messes in (like clothes from a leaky diaper, or completely barfed on clothes) until you can clean them up.
and one last thought ... do pack a disposible changing pad or baby blanket or something to lay over the changing tables in the airport restrooms!!!!!

Karlynn:

Not being a parents, I haven't flown with babies. However, I have been seated near them on many flights.

If I were a parent:
1. I would fly during hours they would most likely be asleep.

2. If possible, I would choose seats near the lavatory. (Many airlines' websites have seating diagrams & you can change seating assignments.) Look at the seating diagrams and see where the wings (engines) might possibly be. It's going to be noisier at those points, might disturb baby but it might also drown out any baby noise.

3. I would definitely have a bottle or pacifier available right before descent to help relieve any pressure in baby's ears.

4. I would secure baby's shoes & toys so he/she can't take off the shoes or throw shoes & toys throughout the cabin, risking losing them.

You have gotten some great advice here. The advice to about the stroller is great. We brought a small umbrella stroller thinking it would be easier to store on plane and did not know about bringing the stroller to the gate, They have a place where you get a tag right before you step on plane they take it and put in where they put wheelchairs and such, so don't worry about the size. Bringing a big enough stroller that you can change baby in is great too. We all know how clean the airport bathrooms are. Purell and anti-bacterial wipes are a traveler's best friend. You won't be needing toys to "occupy" baby at 2 months so I'm thinking just sucking objects will be needed. Always love to hear and pass on helpful advice to my sister, my niece Mikaella Nicole is 16 months old.

P.S. Andrew's kindergarten picture is tooooo cute!!!!!
