Well had a chest ultrasound and there is fluid in my lungs. Don't know how serious it is yet as I haven't seen doc in two days because of all the other appointments and things I have had to get done so I don't know what the plan is. They have been giving me lasik (diuretic or water pill) since day one and I have been using my breathing thing whenever I am awake. Will this help the fluid problem unforntunately I haven't been able to cough anything up.

Well, I take it you are a week out of surgery ... it is not common but not unheard of ... sounds like they and you are doing what should be done ... if it does not resolve with meds they can drain it ... hang tough ... recovery can have a few bumps...

I had fluid for a while too but and was on lasik for a time... eventually it went away. Keep using the spirometer - that's really important. And the walking should really help. BUT, if it gets harder to breathe or you start putting on weight quickly, contact your doctor. That's a sure sign of too much fluid - and may need to be drained - but it's manageable. Hang in there!!!

Water retention & fluid in the lungs is not uncommon after surgery. Lasix and/or other diuretics will help get rid of the fluid. They may want to keep you on the Lasix for a while & watch how things are progressing before draining it.

Also, watch your weight & your sodium intake.

Good luck to you!

Had this too! In fact they sent me home with significant fluid in the lungs. Lasix, spirometer and being mobile is what they recommended and it worked. Good luck!

I still had fluid on my lungs at my 2 week post op appt when they did my chest xray. I wouldn't worry about it. I am 6 weeks post op now and they just took me off the Lasix.

hey Ross... when are u going to change your Avitar??? Everytime I look at a post from you, I get all worked up seeing that pic. LOL

Well doc was in this morning and didn't say anything about draining fluid so they must just going to be keeping me on the lasix. Said as soon as my coumadin is in range I'm blowing this popcicle stand yay. So by the sounds of it by the end of the weekend I'll be on my way home. Taking away the pain pump and putting me on percs. And get the temporay pacer wires out today too.

I was told to use the Incentive Spirometer for 10 minutes every 2 hours while awake. I had fluid between the Lung and Chest wall. I would 'Push' until I could actually feel the fluid being 'squeezed out'. Keep up your exercises (walking and breathing). Progress is SLOW but steady. Rest as your body tells you.

They claimed i had fluid on my lungs too shortly after surgery
Never drained but put me on lasix (still on it) had surgery Jan,but the spirometer works wonders on clearing it up,pretty normal stuff though
with fluid on the lungs, happens to alot of us i assume from reading the posts here.

Take care use the spiometer alot.

You may not want to hear this, but I developed pneumonia about 36-40 hours post-op. Good news, I survived. It would be hard to post otherwise.:eek:

Good luck and do what the doctor advises you.
