FIsh Oil and INR

FIsh Oil and INR

Many people have taken fish oils, omega 3 and 6 oils, and flax seed oils with no changes or problems with anticoagulation. However, there have been several studies where interactions have been observed. See the folllowing as a example:

There have been several other articles with the same result over the past few years.

Hope this helps.

It would be best to discuss with her Cardiologist, just so that he knows and approves (or not).

My Cardiologist recommended that I take 1000 iu of Fish Oil (and I am on Warfarin). I *think* that he also advised that I NOT take 2000 iu (which I believe is the usual recommended dose).

Omega 3s in canned tuna increased my INR dangerously and I ended up with an internal bleed. Granted, I was eating ALOT of tuna then. But I wouldn't touch the stuff now. That's just me.

As Al suggested, the cardiologist should be consulted before taking it. About three months ago, my cardiologist told me to start taking it (about 2000mg per day). However, it certainly impacted my coumadin. My INR went up. I might add that for the past few months, my INR has been more erratic than a drunk trying to bowl.
