Is there a Maximum amount of Fish Oil (supplements) that can be taken with Coumadin / Warfarin? I am currently taking 4 mg of Warfarin and am 'in range' (usually within 3.0 to 3.5 INR).

I have been taking 850 mg Fish Oil gel caps with my Warfarin (from TARO) but that dose is no longer available from the store I have been using. The new doses are 1000 mg and 1700 mg. Would the 1700 mg of Fish Oil put me 'at risk'?

My husband takes 2 1000 tablets a day and has since one month of being on coumadin. This was doctor recommended and we haven't seen any problems so far. He has only been out of range a few time in 4 1/2 years and that was due to a change in diet both times. Once to Soy.

I've been taking two 1000mg capsules in the morning and two 1000mg capsules in the evening and, so far, knock on wood, no bleeding incidences. I have moderate Rheumatoid Arthritis and I find that the fish oil has been helpful with that. I also take the same amount of MSM at the same times and things seem to be progressing well without bleeding. I will admit that my INR has been bouncing a little bit since I went on warfarin, but it stays between 2.35 and 4.45. I think the anticoagulation center that I work with is getting things on target for my SJM mitral valve now. They have me on 32.5 mg per week now. I have no idea what is considered too much fish oil though for someone on warfarin. I'm sure that Al will check in on this soon.

Al,
I was taking 4000 mg/day for several months, but then cut back to 1000 mg/day. Didn't effect my INR a bit.

Why do you take fish oil and what does it do for you? I have never been into any of the herbs, supplements, etc.

Fish Oil is good for people with Coronary Artery Disease.
Supposedly, it helps prevent Heart Attacks.
I don't remember the exact mechanism, but it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

There was some old data that it affected the INR but I don't think that has been proven over the years.

The data on whether or not it helps with heart problems is conflicting. The best you can hope for is that it may help. The worst data shows that it probably makes heart conditions worse. The answer is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of it might help. My doctor has me taking it,too. The strongest effect is probably that it makes HIM feel better.

Al,
I know that the fish oil does seem to help my Rheumatoid Arthritis in a noticable manner. My Cardiologist thinks that the fish oil regimen that I have been on for about seven years now was a contributing factor to my heart being in such good shape other that the mitral valve being junk. No blockages of any kind in the cardiac vessels nourishing the heart. Who know?

Well I don't know but if you all need some fish oil give me a holler

Caught these today 6/15/06

'cuz it is on the same thing.........kind of..........

Can anyone recommend a fish oil brand that does not leave you burping up rancid fish for hours afterwards? I have bought a couple of brands for Don since bad hearts run in his family, and he is on both cholesterol and blood pressure meds, but he kept complaining about burping up rotten fish for several hours later. I didn't believe him, so I tried it, and I'll be damned if I wasn't burping up rotten fish............

If you have a good brand, would you mind sharing its name?

Thanks. J.

Fish oil

Have been taking 2 x 1000mg of fish oil each morning - along with flaxseed, vitamin D and vitamin E - all dr recommended - no problems. I use pilgrim.com as my supplier - they are very good and have lots of price specials.

Good health to all.
