Any advice on what to say / ask when meeting a New Doctor for the first time?

I finally found an INTERNIST who specializes in (Non-invasive) Cardiology among other things AND who is taking new patients. I'm hoping he can handle my basic followup and monitoring needs since my PCP doesn't want to be responsible for my Cardiac Care and it is so difficult to get in to see the Cardiologists unless it is an emergency. In other words, I'm hoping this Internist can help me maintain my balance with my various conditions and medications.

That sounds wonderful, Al. I have found that with any new doctor, bringing a brief medical history and list of current medications and dosages is very helpful. I actually bring them to any appointment that Joe has because they change so frequently. I refer to them as Joe's Clif notes. As you know, he has a long and complicated medical history.

I list every significant illness, surgery and hospitalization in chronological order, with dates, doctors who treated him, hospitals he was at, the outcome and any pertinent notes.

I have managed to fit all of it on one page using a smaller font.

In his list of medications is the name, dosage and how many times per day he takes it. Then at the end in red, I have listed any medications he is allergic to or has had bad reactions to.

I keep a copy in my wallet in case of ER admittances. I forgot to bring them one time when we were in a hurry, and I was really lost. It's too much to remember.

Every doctor appreciates this, and it serves as a jumping off spot for additional conversation.

Good luck.

Hi Al,
All the questions you have write down.
I judge a good doctor by how they listen to me. I had a cardiologist, whom I could tell was very knowlegable, but everytime he came in the room, he stood by the door after a very short period of time in a hurry to get on to the next patient. When it comes to my life, (and the amount of money we pay for health care) you deserve a doctor whom is willing to SINCERELY listen and discuss issues.

Nancy you are proof behind every good man there is a good woman!

Merry Christmas ... Mark
