Hi All,

I had my OHS and Mitral Valve replaced on June 6, 2007. I am walking on off for the past 5 months. Whenever I go out for walk, i cover about 2-2.5 miles in about 30-40 mins and don't feel even a bit of stress.

I am now 34 year old and weigh 120 pounds, never excercised in life. After starting to walk I feel very good and I started loving to jog.

Appreciate if any in this forum have started excersing only after their OHS and their road map.

Can I start jogging or ask a doctor?

Welcome! I was exercising prior to OHS and have now resumed. (Hiking, and exercise machines.) There are avid runners on here who I am sure will check in here and give you their experiences. I would think jogging would be fine, but I think it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before starting a new activity, just as a precaution. We have some in this Forum who run races. Welcome, again, and look forward to your posts on here...

Welcome to VR.com. It sounds like all is going well and that you are on the road to a full recovery. It is always a good idea to talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.

At this point, you should be able to do whatever your body lets you. I had surgery in December of 2005, and ran a 5K in June of 2006. Others on this site have been much more aggressive without issue. Your profile doesn't mention that you are on any beta blockers (such as Toprol or Atenolol), but if you are, be aware that these can negatively affect your stamina.

Some people are given HR restrictions for exercise, and it would be a good idea to call your Cardiologist and get his/her opinions.

Best wishes.

Welcome to our little world wide community! As others have said, it is always best to check with your doctor about starting a new activity. As far as running itself, you should be healed enough to start. Mike makes a good point about meds...they can slow you down quite a bit.

If you get the go ahead, the best method to start up running is to start with 20 minutes...start running, if you have to take a small walk break, that is okay. When you can run all 20 minutes without walking...your a runner! Then you can build up from there.

Based on your comment that exercise is new to you, and that you are 6 months post-op, my opinion is that you should be careful. Check with the doctor before you ramp up. Assuming the doctor gives you the go-ahead, you will jog with more confidence and it will be more fun not worrying. Enjoy!
