My son, 20 is scheduled to have the Ross Procedure performed. Other than asking the Dr., are there any sites to look up the number of RPs a Dr has performed? We have a few months to firm this up and any help finding and reviewing surgeon info would be much appreciated. Any other relevant metrics would also be helpful.

As some have said in the forum, the family seems more concerned than the patient.....

Have you checked out the Ross Procedure Mailing List? It's not a very active group compared to this one, but if you post a message you'll likely get some responses (if no one here can answer the question.)

You can subscribe to it here, or browse previous messages:

I had an RP about 2 1/2 months ago. When I was researching it. I believe I did see a list of surgeons with the number they have performed, but later I couldn't find it!

I interviewed a local surgeon who had done over 90. That's a pretty respectable number. But then I spent some time talking to Dr. Stelzer on the phone and he told me a couple of things about how he did things which sounded a lot better, so I went with him. I couldn't be more pleased. In fact, if I had gone to the local surgeon, I wouldn't have been able to get the Ross because of how my aortic valve was shaped in relation to the coronary arteries, but Dr. Stelzer didn't have a problem with it. So, I'm really glad I went to him!

Ross surgeons

I had the opportunity to ask Dr.Stelzer a question live during a webcast of a Ross Procedure he was performing. He e-mailed me privately the next day to elaborate on his answer(!), and I took the opportunity to ask for his recommendation for highly experienced Ross surgeons (I said "those close to his caliber"). I was asking specifically for pediatric surgeons, but I know that many do both s and children. He suggested John Brown in Indianapolis, Dr. Al Pacifico at the U. of Alabama, Birmingham and Jan Quagebeur at Columbia-Presbyterian Babies Hospita in NYC. If my son were over 18 though, I would definately travel to NYC for Dr.Stelzer. After much research, he seems to be the best. Best of luck.

Going to the RP listserve and asking the question can help.

However it has been my experience on that listserve that there is alot of "selling" of the big three surgeons.

Don't missunderstand me...everyone is sure their surgeon was the best and wants to tell everyone.

Take your time and do your own research and make the best decision for you.

God Bless,

Ben Smith

Many thanks to all of your replies. I did find the list serve and it works well. I will look into Dr Stelzer.
